Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IAS Special Publication contains 23 papers presented at the 3rd International Research Symposium on Modern and Ancient Clastic Tidal Deposits. This symposium series has an enviable international reputation for its quality, and so the contributions represent the latest developments in the field. The conference was preceded and followed by a number of field trips to some of the most prominent tidal flat and barrier island systems of continental Europe, and these have been written up as overview papers that summarize the current state of knowledge about these various tidal regions. The latest research results from this very specialized field. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive, contemporary review of tidal environments and deposits. Individual chapters, each written by world-class experts, cover the full spectrum of coastal, shallow-marine and even deep-marine settings where tidal action influences or controls sediment movement and deposition. Both siliciclastic and carbonate deposits are covered. Various chapters examine the dynamics of sediment transport by tides, and the morphodynamics of tidal systems. Several chapters explore the occurrence of tidal deposits in the stratigraphic context of entire sedimentary basins. This book is essential reading for both coastal geologists and managers, and geologists interested in extracting hydrocarbons from complex tidal successions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three-day Symposium on Clastic Tidal Deposits was organlzed In Utrecht in August 1985, and attended by about 200 participants. Durlng the meeting some 60 papers and 25 posters were presented, while simultaneously workshops on varlous topics were held. The meeting was generously sponsored by the International Asso ciation of Sedimentologists, the Royal Dutch I Shell Exploration and Productlon Laboratories, Brltish Petroleum Company, Chevron Oil Company, and K.L.M. This volume contalns extended versions of papers that were presented durlng the meeting, papers reporting about items studied durlng the excursions, and, more over, several contributions which were soliclted after the conference In order to make the volume more representative. As in most fields of sedimentological research, the comparlson of recent processes and products with ancient counterparts and vlce versa is important for under standing the full sequence of processes and events that lead to the final end product of tide-influenced sedimentary environments. In this respect we are happy that recent as weil as fossil sediments get ample attention. Research on tidal sedimentary processes and products has tradltionally put much emphasis on siliciclastic sediments. Still, carbonate and mixed carbonate/silici clastic sediments, though being subject to tidal influences in many places, receive little· attention in this respect, which, we regret; is also reflected In this volume.

Book excerpt: Tidal deposits have been a specific research topic for about 40 years, and whilst this has resulted in a proliferation of papers in scientific journals, there have only been a few book-length syntheses. Over the years, tidal sedimentology has been reinforced by fluid mechanics and numerical modelling but has remained rooted in facies and stratigraphic studies. Recent developments in tidal sedimentology lean toward a more quantitative assessment of the imprint of tides in the facies record of intertidal and shallow subtidal areas. They highlight the increasing relevance of tidal deposits studies, from high resolution subsurface reservoir geology to climate change and sea-level rise. This volume gathers 17 contributions to the Tidalites 2012 congress held in Caen, France. It reflects current advances in the sedimentology and stratigraphy of tidal deposits, in both ancient and modern environments. It shows the current diversity of this field of research, through a wide spectrum of methods including remote sensing, in-situ hydrodynamical measurements, and ichnology, in addition to classic field studies and petrography.
