Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to regulate cell volume in the face of osmotic challenge is one of the most fundamental of cellular homeostatic mechanisms. Cellular and Molecular Physiology of Cell Volume Regulation is an integrated collection of articles describing key aspects of cell volume control. The book has been organized around concepts and cellular/molecular processes rather than around mechanisms of volume regulation in specific cell types in order to make it more accessible to a multidisciplinary audience of students, instructors, and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In front of you is the finished product of your work, the text of your contributions to the 2003 Dayton International Symposium on Cell Volume and Signal Transduction. As we all recall, this symposium brought together the Doyens of Cellular and Molecular Physiology as well as aspiring young investigators and students in this field. It became a memorable event in an illustrious series of International Symposia on Cell Volume and Signaling. This series, started by Professors Vladimir Strbák, Florian Lang and Monte Greer in Smolenice, Slovakia in 1997 and continued by Professors Rolf Kinne, Florian Lang and Frank Wehner in Berlin in 2000, is projected for 2005 in Copenhagen to be hosted by our colleague, Professor Else Hoffmann and her team. We dearly miss Monte Greer to whom this symposium was dedicated and addressed so eloquently by Vladimir Strbák in his Dedication to Monte. Monte and I became friends in Smolenice and had begun to discuss the 2003 meeting only a few days before his tragic accident in 2002. There are others who were not with us, and we missed them, too. We would not have been able to succeed in this event without the unflagging support of our higher administration at Wright State University, the NIDDKD of the National Institute of Health, and the Fuji Medical System (see Acknowledgments).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a unique compilation of reviews on cell volume regulation in health and disease, with contributions from leading experts in the field. The topics covered include mechanisms and signaling of cell volume regulation and the effect of cell volume on cell function, with special emphasis on ion channels and transporters, kinases and gene expression. Several chapters elaborate on how cell volume regulatory mechanisms participate in the regulation of epithelial transport, urinary concentration, metabolism, migration, cell proliferation and apoptosis. Last but not least, this publication is an excellent guide to the role of cell volume in the pathophysiology of hypercatabolism, diabetes mellitus, brain edema, hemoglobinopathies, tumor growth and metastasis, to name just a few. Providing deeper insights into an exciting area of research which is also of clinical relevance, this publication is a valuable addition to the library of those interested in cell volume regulation.

Osmotic perturbation confronts the cells withthe problem of volume regulation, because most animal cell membrane are highly permeable to water.A number of cellular physiological activities are associated with osmotic perturbation to cells. Those include active solute uptake by enterocytes, renal tubular cells or hepatocytes, fluid and electrolyte secretion by glandular cells, cell mitogenesis or proliferation, cell differentiation, hormonal action on hepatocytes, lymphocytes or cardiac myocytes, excitation in neurons, and glutamate receptor activation in brain neurons or glial cells. Also, in kidney medulla and intestinal tissues, not only epithelial cells but also blood and mesenchymal cells may be subject to osmotic stress induced by increased extracellular osmolality.Under pathological conditions, cel

Book excerpt: One of the prerequisites for survival is the ability of cells to maintain their volume. Thus, during the course of evolution cells have "learned" a variety of strategies to achieve volume homeostasis. This volume regulatory machinery involves regulation of both, cellular metabolism and cellular transport and is exploited by hormones and transmitters to regulate cellularfunction. This book to illustrates the complex interplay of cell volume regulatory mechanisms and cellular function in a variety of tissues. However, our knowledge is still far from being conclusive, and the present collection of reviews is thought to foster further experimental efforts to unravel the role of cell volume in the integrated function of cells.

Book excerpt: The aim of this handbook is to survey key areas in modern cellular and molecular physiology. The topics covered range from the most fundamental biophysical and biochemical bases of cellular physiology to more concerted cellular biological processes. A more elusive goal of this volume is to provide a framework for future research linking these various processes in whole animal systems. The chapters begin with descriptions of basic membrane processes including membrane structure as it relates to function, the biophysics of membrane transport, and cell volume regulatory mechanisms. The organization and function of the plasma membrane and intracellular organelles involved in membrane trafficking and the biogenesis of cell polarity are then reviewed in depth. Energy generation and transduction subserving cellular function are covered in another series of chapters. The structure and function of the cytoskeleton and its relationship to events regulated by interaction with the extracellular matrix are examined in detail. Chapters on the integrative aspects of cellular physiology including immunobiology, cellular interactions, fertilizaton, and interactions of cells with the extracellular matrix round out this authoritative survey of contemporary cellular physiology. Researchers, instructors, post-doctorate and graduate students will find it a uniquely useful resource.
