Book excerpt: A step-by-step instruction manual on how to build a lightweight 'environmentally-friendly' boat with recyclable resources. The boats simply fold up from ¼” thick cardboard obtaining their strength from the geometry of the component parts. The boats are 8-feet long, weigh about 25-pounds, and can accommodate a 250-pound person without risking structural damage. Each boat is constructed with 21-pieces of cardboard that are used to make 7-component parts. The 7 parts are assembled together with 'environmentally-friendly' contact cement and paper drywall tape. Once assembled the boats are sealed with an 'environmentally-friendly' water-based waterproof coating. No special tools are required and they are very simple to build. All of the materials used to build a boat are typically found at 'do-it-yourself' home improvement stores. The boats can be outfitted with 12-volt electric fishing motors, although they are typically propelled with traditional Kayak style paddles.

Book excerpt: There are literally thousands of questions that run through your mind when you start the search for your first or next great boat. Fortunately for all, Art Edmunds has put his many years of experience as a naval architect, engineer and surveyor into this book, Buying A Great Boat. This book will answer those questions and more. Regardless of your boating knowledge, this book should be the first stop in the quest for your next boat. Art begins with the type of boat that is proper for your type of use, whether it is diving, fishing or cruising. He then moves on to all the facets of a boat, its power and its systems. This will insure you have the understanding needed to choose the correct boat for that usage. As you read further, you will learn what makes the difference between a poorly built boat and a well built boat. Many of the glossy boat brochures fail to mention more than the eye appealing details of the boat. Art explains what the brochures can't: the methods of manufacturing, what works and what doesn't. Art will be the first to point out that just because a boat looks good doesn't mean it is good. When you are finished with this book, you too will know the difference. Illustrated

Book excerpt: What begins as the sheer desire for adventure turns into a spiritual quest as a young woman comes to terms with her family, her dreams, and her first love. Tania Aebi was an unambitious eighteen-year-old, a bicycle messenger in New York City by day, a Lower East Side barfly at night. In short, she was going nowhere—until her father offered her a challenge: Tania could choose either a college education or a twenty-six-foot sloop. The only catch was that if she chose the sailboat, she’d have to sail around the world—alone. She chose the boat, and for the next two and a half years and 27,000 miles, it was her home. With only her cat as companion, she discovered the wondrous beauties of the Great Barrier Reef and the death-dealing horrors of the Red Sea. She suffered through a terrifying collision with a tanker in the Mediterranean and a lightning storm off the coast of Gibraltar. And, ultimately, what began with the sheer desire for adventure turned into a spiritual quest as Tania came to terms with her troubled family life, fell in love for the first time, and—most of all—confronted her own needs, desires, dreams, and goals…
