Book excerpt: In a world marked by an ancient, never-ending war, two boys live very different lives. Good-hearted Oren Raevin, with his mother dead and his father missing, is an outcast in his village. In contrast, Syris Ulzary is the pride of his people, although his heart is corrupted. As tensions rise in their homes, a talking bear named Ral appears to each one and spirits them away. Where the bear plans to lead them, however, is far more dangerous than they could have anticipated. Monsters, demons, and magical entities all block the way on the frightful path to their goal—to find the Goddess of Origin, the creator of the universe, before Tora, the God of Rage, breaks free of his prison and destroys everything. As Ral struggles to keep Oren and Syris alive, the secrets surrounding them threaten to pull their fragile bond apart. Events reveal both the lies and truths that have defined the boys’ lives, and they find themselves questioning their own realities. If this unlikely trio of heroes isn’t strong enough to withstand the danger, the journey could end them. In this fantasy novel, two boys join forces with a talking bear in an attempt to save their world from destruction at the hands of the God of Rage.

Book excerpt: Shaara never asked to be in charge. Since taking command of the mysterious AI warship Warden, and the eccentric mercenary company that calls him home, she’s only accepted jobs that let her conscience sleep at night. The trouble is, those jobs don’t pay too well. After more than a year of fighting for the downtrodden, the exploited, and the oppressed, the Wardens’ coffers are running dry. So when they get a suspicious but lucrative offer from a pariah republic on the fringe of galactic politics, Shaara ignores the warning voice in her head and accepts. Of course, the voice is right—it usually is. The contract takes the Wardens to the edges of explored space; there, in the vast darkness beyond the galactic core, a great and terrible force is gathering—a foe far deadlier than they’ve ever fought. The galaxy’s not ready to face it. Has Shaara saved them all from Gaeus Nemesis just to die another day? What’s more, this new enemy holds the key to another mystery. As they fight for their lives, Shaara and Corax are forced to ask themselves a question they hoped they’d never have to: How much do they really know about Warden? And can they trust him?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and why did credible scientists, engineers, government officials, journalists, and others collectively give rise to a drastic failure to control the threat to the population of the Fukushima disaster? Why was there no effort on the part of inter-organizational networks, well-coordinated in the nuclear village, to prevent the risks from turning into a disaster? This book answers these questions by formulating the concept of "structural disaster" afresh. First, the book presents the path-dependent development of structural disaster through a sociological reformulation of path-dependent mechanisms not only in the context of nuclear energy but also in the context of renewable energy. Secondly, it traces the origins of structural disaster to a secret accident involving standardized military technology immediately before World War II, and opportunistic utilization of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, thus reconstructing the development of structural disaster within a long-term historical perspective. Maintaining distance from conflicts of interest and cultural essentialisms, this book highlights configurations and mechanisms of structural disasters that are far more persistent, more universal, but less visible, and that have turned risk into suffering. The book seeks to cast light on an important new horizon of the science-technology-society interface in the sociology of science and technology, science and technology studies, the sociology of disaster, the social history of the military-industrial-university complex, and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on nuclear engineering education in the post-Fukushima era. It was edited by the organizers of the summer school held in August 2011 in University of California, Berkeley, as part of a collaborative program between the University of Tokyo and UC Berkeley. Motivated by the particular relevance and importance of social-scientific approaches to various crucial aspects of nuclear technology, special emphasis was placed on integrating nuclear science and engineering with social science. The book consists of the lectures given in 2011 summer school and additional chapters that cover developments in the past three years since the accident. It provides an arena for discussions to find and create a renewed platform for engineering practices, and thus nuclear engineering education, which are essential in the post-Fukushima era for nurturing nuclear engineers who need to be both technically competent and trusted in society.
