Book excerpt: Always received with a mix of fascination and awe, blob architecture is conquering the metropolises of the world. With their futuristic look - softly rounded at times, boldly curved at others - the buildings stand out from the bulk of urban structures. Whether a classic computer-generated blob, an experiment with new mould-breaking shapes, or in combination with de-constructive elements - the applied cutting-edge technologies and materials are fertile grounds for unlimited creativity. Blob ! Round Shapes, Fluid Forms presents the best contemporary projects from around the world, giving a comprehensive overview of current developments. The projects that were carefully selected for this book are as unique as they are versatile and vivid proof that the fascination of the blob remains as strong as ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generating form is one of the most fundamental aspects of architectural education and practice. While new computational tools are enabling ever more unpredictable forms, critics argue that this leads to a disconnection between architectural output and its context. This attractive, pocket-sized book uses 11 different architectural projects to explore how generative design processes can integrate digital as well as physical design tools and techniques to produce innovative forms that cohere with structural and material principles, performance and context. Illustrated with drawings, computer images and models, this stimulating, accessible handbook of ideas provides a guide for students as well as an inspiration for practising architects.

Book excerpt: This book presents 50 selected peer-reviewed contributions from the 10th Anniversary International Conference on “Physics and Mechanics of New Materials and Their Applications”, PHENMA 2021-2022 (23-27 May, 2022, Divnomorsk, Russia), focusing on processing techniques, physics, mechanics, and applications of advanced materials. The book describes a broad spectrum of promising nanostructures, crystal structures, materials, and composites with unique properties. It presents nanotechnological design approaches, environmental-friendly processing techniques, and physicochemical as well as mechanical studies of advanced materials. The selected contributions describe recent progress in computational materials science methods and algorithms (in particular, finite-element and finite-difference modelling) applied to various technological, mechanical, and physical problems. The presented results are important for ongoing efforts concerning the theory, modelling, and testing of advanced materials. Other results are devoted to promising devices with higher accuracy, increased longevity, and greater potential to work effectively under critical temperatures, high pressure, and in aggressive environments.

Book excerpt: An attempt to free architecture from site and program constraints and to counter the profusion of ever bigger architecture books with ever smaller content. Some may call it the first manifesto of the twenty-first century, for it lays down a new way to think about architecture. Others may think of it as the last architectural treatise, for it provides a discursive container for ideas that would otherwise be lost. Whatever genre it belongs to, SITELESS is a new kind of architecture book that seems to have come out of nowhere. Its author, a young French architect practicing in Tokyo, admits he “didn't do this out of reverence toward architecture, but rather out of a profound boredom with the discipline, as a sort of compulsive reaction.” What would happen if architects liberated their minds from the constraints of site, program, and budget? he asks. The result is a book that is saturated with forms, and as free of words as any architecture book the MIT Press has ever published. The 1001 building forms in SITELESS include structural parasites, chain link towers, ball bearing floors, corrugated corners, exponential balconies, radial facades, crawling frames, forensic housing—and other architectural ideas that may require construction techniques not yet developed and a relation to gravity not yet achieved. SITELESS presents an open-ended compendium of visual ideas for the architectural imagination to draw from. The forms, drawn freehand (to avoid software-specific shapes) but from a constant viewing angle, are presented twelve to a page, with no scale, order, or end to the series. After setting down 1001 forms in siteless conditions and embryonic stages, Blanciak takes one of the forms and performs a “scale test,” showing what happens when one of these fantastic ideas is subjected to the actual constraints of a site in central Tokyo. The book ends by illustrating the potential of these shapes to morph into actual building proportions.
