Book excerpt: Twenty years in the making, this sweeping masterpiece charts Berlin through the rise of Nazism. During the past two decades, Jason Lutes has quietly created one of the masterworks of the graphic novel golden age. Berlin is one of the high-water marks of the medium: rich in its well-researched historical detail, compassionate in its character studies, and as timely as ever in its depiction of a society slowly awakening to the stranglehold of fascism. Berlin is an intricate look at the fall of the Weimar Republic through the eyes of its citizens—Marthe Müller, a young woman escaping the memory of a brother killed in World War I, Kurt Severing, an idealistic journalist losing faith in the printed word as fascism and extremism take hold; the Brauns, a family torn apart by poverty and politics. Lutes weaves these characters’ lives into the larger fabric of a city slowly ripping apart. The city itself is the central protagonist in this historical fiction. Lavish salons, crumbling sidewalks, dusty attics, and train stations: all these places come alive in Lutes’ masterful hand. Weimar Berlin was the world’s metropolis, where intellectualism, creativity, and sensuous liberal values thrived, and Lutes maps its tragic, inevitable decline. Devastatingly relevant and beautifully told, Berlin is one of the great epics of the comics medium.

Book excerpt: Following the defeat of the Third Reich in 1945, Germany has experienced recurring turmoil and reinvention. In this ambitious book, Michael Gehler explores the political path Germany has taken since the Yalta Conference, observing the different Germanies against the background of the Cold War, European integration, and international relations. Written from an independent perspective, it provides a valuable assessment of our own times, as he shows how the three Germanies (Bonn, Pankow, and today’s “Berlin Republic”) sought to establish governments that could create stable states.

Book excerpt: In a book that is both biography and the most exciting form of history, here are eighteen years in the life of a man, Albert Einstein, and a city, Berlin, that were in many ways the defining years of the twentieth century. Einstein in Berlin In the spring of 1913 two of the giants of modern science traveled to Zurich. Their mission: to offer the most prestigious position in the very center of European scientific life to a man who had just six years before been a mere patent clerk. Albert Einstein accepted, arriving in Berlin in March 1914 to take up his new post. In December 1932 he left Berlin forever. “Take a good look,” he said to his wife as they walked away from their house. “You will never see it again.” In between, Einstein’s Berlin years capture in microcosm the odyssey of the twentieth century. It is a century that opens with extravagant hopes--and climaxes in unparalleled calamity. These are tumultuous times, seen through the life of one man who is at once witness to and architect of his day--and ours. He is present at the events that will shape the journey from the commencement of the Great War to the rumblings of the next one. We begin with the eminent scientist, already widely recognized for his special theory of relativity. His personal life is in turmoil, with his marriage collapsing, an affair under way. Within two years of his arrival in Berlin he makes one of the landmark discoveries of all time: a new theory of gravity--and before long is transformed into the first international pop star of science. He flourishes during a war he hates, and serves as an instrument of reconciliation in the early months of the peace; he becomes first a symbol of the hope of reason, then a focus for the rage and madness of the right. And throughout these years Berlin is an equal character, with its astonishing eruption of revolutionary pathways in art and architecture, in music, theater, and literature. Its wild street life and sexual excesses are notorious. But with the debacle of the depression and Hitler’s growing power, Berlin will be transformed, until by the end of 1932 it is no longer a safe home for Einstein. Once a hero, now vilified not only as the perpetrator of “Jewish physics” but as the preeminent symbol of all that the Nazis loathe, he knows it is time to leave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first commentary on the whole of [Tibullus] 3 in English. It consists of a text, translation, introduction and commentary. The text rests on the author’s autopsy of the most important manuscripts of [Tibullus]. The prose translation is as literal as possible, in order to bring out clearly the meaning of the Latin. The detailed line-by-line commentary serves to clarify the language and literary associations of the poems and to back up the theory that the whole work was composed by a single unitary author. It argues that what were previously thought of as separate sections of the book, composed by different authors at different times, were in fact the product of a single anonymous poet impersonating, or adopting the mask of, different characters in each section: Lygdamus (poems 1-6), a young Tibullus (7), a commentator on Sulpicia’s affair with Cerinthus (8-12), Sulpicia (13-18) and Tibullus (19-20). The close connections and associations between these different sections and their use of the same Augustan intertexts are shown to favour a unitary interpretation of the work. The main literary inspiration for the work, this volume argues, comes from the elegists of the Augustan period, but its date of composition could have been late in the first century AD, linking it with the other pseudepigraphical writings of this century such as the Virgilian and Ovidian Appendices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a hidden, powerful secret to becoming more creative and finding success with your work? Did creative masters like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Henri Matisse possess an abundance of talent the rest of us can only dream of? This book is the third in a three-part series about the Power of Creativity for new writers, musicians, filmmakers, artists. It’s for anyone who has a great idea (or even just a little one) but they’re finding it difficult to act on their idea, do deep work and finish their most important creative projects. In this book, you will discover these strategies: ˃˃˃ 1. Immerse Yourself in Your Work There’s a mindset successful creative people adopt too. Call it flow, call it a fugue, call it total immersion: I’ll show you how creative masters turn on and off this mindset at will and how you can do the same. ˃˃˃ 2. Seek Out Solitude Extroverts thrive when working in the company of others, but many writers, musicians, painters and artists do their best work alone. So how can you create alone and still feel positive about your work and the self? ˃˃˃ 3. Be Obsessed It takes a level of focus and even obsession to see a creative project (like writing a book or composing an album) from beginning to end. If you’re alarmed, know that obsession is something you can embrace rather than fear”with the right approach. ˃˃˃ 4. Root Out Perfectionism Like a Weed Perfectionism is a nasty weed that could be choking the life out of your ideas. I’ll guide you through the types of perfectionism to watch out for” and then root them out. ˃˃˃ 5. Practice Your Craft Deliberately What is deliberate practice? It’s not enough to just practice writing, drawing or painting every day. You must be smart about the techniques you use for learning, practicing and problem solving. ˃˃˃ 6. Cut the Cord For every creative person, there comes a time when you must focus on what’s important, commit to doing the work” and cut the rope. In this personal story, I explain what this looks like ˃˃˃ 7. Fall Forwards Making messy mistakes is part of the creative process. The trick is to getting positive results is to test your ideas sooner and learn from your mistakes. If you want to discover how to conquer procrastination, finish your work and find success, download a sample or buy now.
