Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1852 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XII. How rarely is it--more rarely than when, in the midst of the broad Atlantic, vessel meets vessel--that man can ask his heart, "What cheer V and receive for answer, "Alls well." When Julian Ludlow retired to his chamber that night--when the door was closed, and, by the kindly but officious care of Mr. Westwoods valet, he was hurried to bed more rapidly than he desired--he lay awake for upwards of an hour, notwithstanding the exhaustion of illness, and the unusual fatigue. The cry rose up within him--" What cheer?" But the answer never was "Alls well." At one time, it was "Breakers a-head " and at others, the same voice spoke of dangers all around. Every one has felt how different is the aspect of the same facts and circumstances at each varying hour of the day; how differently we look upon our fate and future in the merry morning, in the sunny noon, and in the dull, silent night; and there left alone, with the dim watch-lamp winking in the chimney, almost all that was bright and cheering in the events of that day passed away from Julians eyes like unreal pageants; and nothing but the dark, and the coarse, and the heavy remained. Sometimes he could hardly believe it real; that he had spoken as he had; that Mary had so answered him; that their almost insane love had been breathed to each other; that their hearts had found voice in sounds beyond recal. It seemed a dream--a vision, which could have no truth in it; and yet it came back and back upon him with an awful sense of all its consequences. Was not the love itself rash, mad, hopeless % Had not the avowal of it been wrong, base, ungrateful? "What would Mr. Westwood think--he who had loaded him with kindness--he who had fostered, with such tenderness, his youth, promoted...

Book excerpt: Princess. Warrior. Dragon Shifter. Huntress. When it comes to protecting her family, eighteen-year-old Princess Huntress is known for kicking ass, taking names and then kicking a little more ass, just to be sure. She’s the last of her kind—a glass dragon shifter—and no matter what the threat, Huntress always tracks it down solo. Then Huntress meets the leader of the L’Griffe crime family, Gage Beaufort, who is a dashing dragon shifter with a knee-melting stare. The attraction is instant, yet Huntress hates it. Why? Crime syndicates hurt royal authority, which means they threaten her family. Long story short, being with Gage is just wrong. Besides Huntress already has a rock-solid life plan, and that’s to fight alone, forever. No relationships, thank you very much. But when a new danger threatens the royals, everything changes. Now Huntress needs a mercenary army and fast, so she forges an alliance with L’Griffe. To protect those she loves, Huntress agrees to marry someone she loathes: Gage Beaufort. But will the extra help be enough? Even worse, Huntress’ family isn’t the only thing at risk--the same is true for the princess’ heart. Because Gage is a man who always gets what he wants. In this case, the crime lord desires Princess Huntress, body and soul. “Every page is entertaining… an exciting story that unfolds with magic, dragons, a little romance and a villain to despise.” – Tonja, Goodreads Angelbound Offspring 1. If you want a fantasy world with sexy times, this series is for you.” -Rosee Reads Gage runs the L’Griffe, AKA the dragon shifter mafia on Earth. Since the human realm has no supernatural police, the L’Griffe do more than loan money or sell contraband. When it comes to dragon shifters, the L’Griffe are the law. And Gage isn’t the only sheriff in town, either. Other secret groups have their own gangs, including ghouls, demons, and everything in between. It’s an awkward balance, but it works. Until the demons consolidate into the Horde. This alliance plans to take over Earth, and that’s just for starters. Now Gage must build his own connections to fight this new threat. Fortunately, Gage’s true love, Huntress, comes from a family of superhuman warriors. All of them agree to team up and put down the Horde. Success seems just around the corner. Then the truth becomes clear. Thanks to magical cloning, the Horde is led by an old enemy of Huntress’ family—one that everyone thought had been destroyed forever. Now their archnemesis is back and more powerful than anyone could have imagined. Looks like defeating these demons may also destroy Gage, Huntress, and everyone they love. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violacein and deoxyviolacein are promising therapeutics against pathogenic bacteria and viruses as well as tumor cells. In the present work, systems-wide metabolic engineering was applied to Escherichia coli for heterologous production of these high-value products. First, a high performance liquid chromatography method for accurate separation and quantification of violacein and deoxyviolacein was developed. Afterwards, a basic producer, E. coli dVio-1, that expressed the vioABCE cluster from Chromobacterium violaceum under control of the araBAD promoter and induction by L-arabinose, was constructed. Targeted intracellular metabolite analysis then identified bottlenecks in pathways that supply tryptophan, the major product building block of the natural products of interest. This was used for systems-wide engineering of serine, chorismate and tryptophan biosynthesis and the non-oxidative pentose-phosphate pathway, followed by elimination of L-arabinose catabolism. Transferred to a glycerol-based fed-batch process, E. coli dVio-8 surpassed the gram scale and produced 1.6 g L-1 deoxyviolacein (> 99.5% purity). The created chassis of a high-flux tryptophan pathway was complemented by genomic integration of the vioD gene of Janthinobacterium lividum, which enabled exclusive production of violacein (710 mg L-1 with 99.8% purity). This demonstrates the potential of E. coli as a platform for production of tryptophan based therapeutics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Science, like the biological sciences in general, has undergone seismic shifts in the last thirty or so years. Of course science is always changing and metamorphosing, but these shifts have meant that modern plant science has moved away from its previous more agricultural and botanical context, to become a core biological discipline in its own right. However the sheer amount of information that is accumulating about plant science, and the difficulty of grasping it all, understanding it and evaluating it intelligently, has never been harder for the new generation of plant scientists or, for that matter, established scientists. And that is precisely why this Handbook of Plant Science has been put together. Discover modern, molecular plant sciences as they link traditional disciplines! Derived from the acclaimed Encyclopedia of Life Sciences! Thorough reference of up-to-the minute, reliable, self-contained, peer-reviewed articles – cross-referenced throughout! Contains 255 articles and 48 full-colour pages, written by top scientists in each field! The Handbook of Plant Science is an authoritative source of up-to-date, practical information for all teachers, students and researchers working in the field of plant science, botany, plant biotechnology, agriculture and horticulture.
