Book excerpt: As drivers you have the power of life or death; if you drive with recklessness abandonment, you will injury or kill someone else or yourself. If all Pedestrians, Motorcyclist, Bicyclist, and Drivers obeyed the law, accidents would be greatly reduced. I have driven over 3 million miles in the western part of the United States, I have been involved in 4 car accidents, of which two were my fault, they happened when I was young and thought I had all the answers in another words I was stupid. I not only drive defensively; I am able to predict events before they happen. I watch trends and I am able to predict events in front, behind, and both sides of my car. I haven't driven much in snow yet my tips and perception of the four main categories will work everywhere; in snow all drivers need to slow down and be even more careful. When you can recognize what stupid people are going to do, you might be able to avoid having an accident.

Book excerpt: Stupid Mistakes People Make Which Result in Bodily Harm and Suggestions as to How to Avoid Becoming One of the Statistics By: Dr. George L. Lucas, MD Dr. George L. Lucas, MD practiced orthopedic surgery for fifty years. During that time, he treated thousands of people who were injured in a variety of ways. Orthopedic surgeons treat patients with infections, arthritis, congenital deformities, tumors, and developmental problems, but the bulk of an orthopedist’s work involves caring for trauma patients, i.e., those who have been injured as a result of their own misadventures or those of others, such as a drunk driver. His two years as a navy surgeon during the Vietnam War brough another category of victims. Regardless of injury mechanics, one wonders how people could get into such a fix, and Dr. Lucas began to wonder about the statistics of being injured in various ways. This curiosity turned into a collection of accidents in various categories of injury and has resulted in a collection of sixteen chapters for different types of injury, auto accidents, falls, home, and industrial accidents etc. Statistics can be a bit dry, so each chapter is illustrated with an anecdote from Dr. Lucas’s personal experience. He expresses his empathy for all his patients, regardless of what stupidity brough them to his door, and concludes each chapter with some suggestions as to how to avoid becoming one of the statistics themselves.

Book excerpt: The key to unlocking your power—and the inspired life that comes with it—from the renowned voice and acting coach. You know that person: the one with that certain something. And you’ve probably dismissed that something as unattainable, simply innate. But it’s a myth that some are born with “it” and others aren’t. Everybody can have that presence—and the peaceful self-acceptance that powers it. Patsy Rodenburg reveals that the secret is learning to inhabit “the second circle”: the optimal state between the first circle of introversion and self-doubt and the third of aggression and narcissism. She provides exercises to help you break the habits that constrict your real power and to better cope with the negative behaviors and attitudes of those around you. With wisdom and patience, Rodenburg teaches you how to communicate effectively at home, work, school, and—most important—with yourself. The Second Circle will empower you to meet life’s most extraordinary trials with brio and to embrace the joys and challenges of every single day.

Book excerpt: Ride Hard, Ride Smart is a practical, hands-on survival guide for the average motorcyclist. This book provides advanced survival and safety strategies for the developing rider. The vast wealth of knowledge and information developed by the motorcycle safety industry is bound into one chapter and one simple concept-the "three degrees of separation"-that sets the stage for the rest of the book. The three degrees of separation are riding strategies, training and skills, and protective gear-the things that separate the rider from death and injury. Hahn rates motorcycle risk and riding on a scale of one to ten, ten being mere moments away from certain death, and one being home safe in bed. Every motorcycle ride falls somewhere in between. Using the three degrees of separation, a rider can get the risk level down to a controllable level, creating the safest possible situation on a moving motorcycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic thesis of the manifesto is as follows: The American aversion to bicycling for transportation is a unique historical-cultural absurdity that is based largely on false assumptions and bad information. As the nation's acute energy predicament intensifies, the most simple and elegant remedy available is the one that almost never gets mentioned. The avoidance of the bicycle in recent public discourse has been conspicuous, ridiculous, and downright strange. While bicycling, for a variety of reasons, will not be the best choice for everybody, it is realistic to think that we in the US could grow the mode share of the bicycle to around 5%. (This would represent a huge increase in the number of cyclists currently on the road, but would still be far below levels currently seen in many European countries.) Boosting the mode share of bicycling to this seemingly modest level would produce rather intense, far-reaching positive effects (and a few negative ones), at an extremely low cost. The latter half of the manifesto will be devoted to painting the undeniably tantalizing picture of just what those effects might be -- for instance, the health care savings would be astronomical -- and the different ways that individuals and governments can go about wresting back control over their energy destiny. The author's recommendations are surprising. It'll be easier than we think. It will even be fun. The roads are already bikeable, and there's an old bike waiting in the garage behind the wetvac.

Book excerpt: SUVs have taken over America's roads. Ad campaigns promote them as safer and "greener" than ordinary cars and easy to handle in bad weather. But very little about the SUV's image is accurate. They poorly protect occupants and inflict horrific damage in crashes, they guzzle gasoline, and they are hard to control. Keith Bradsher has been at the forefront in reporting the calamitous safety and environmental record of SUVs, including the notorious Ford-Firestone rollover controversy. In High and Mighty, he traces the checkered history of SUVs, showing how they came to be classified not as passenger cars but as light trucks, which are subject to less strict regulations on safety, gas mileage, and air pollution. He makes a powerful case that these vehicles are even worse than we suspect--for their occupants, for other motorists, for pedestrians and for the planet itself. In the tradition of Unsafe at Any Speed and Fast Food Nation, Bradsher's book is a damning exposé of an industry that puts us all at risk, whether we recognize it or not.
