MILNE Intelligent Applications Ltd The papers in this volume are the Application Papers presented at ES98, the Eighteenth International Conference of the British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Expert Systems. This year has been yet another "applications" success for the conference with this volume containing seventeen papers describing either deployed applications or emerging applications. All these documented case studies provide clear evidence of the success of AI technology in solving real business problems. Six of these papers were nominated for the Best Application Award during the review process. These nominations were then reviewed by the members of the Programme Committee to select the winning paper. The papers in the volume were subject to refereeing by at least two referees. All papers which were controversial for some reason were discussed in depth by the Application Programme Committee. Ten referees from the industrial and commercial sector and nine referees from the academic sector assisted me in reviewing the papers. The review form asked the referee to score the papers according to a number of dimensions, to rate it overall, and to offer critical comments to me, and to the authors. It also asks the referee to score their expertise in the area of each paper they review. Only reviews from 'expert' referees are used.

Book excerpt: Expert system technology is receiving increasing popularity and acceptance in the engineering community. This is due to the fact that there actually exists a close match between the capabilities of the current generation expert systems and the requirements of engineering practice. Prepared by a distinguished team of experts, this book provides a balanced state-of-the-art presentation of the design principles of engineering expert systems, and a representative picture of their capabilities to assist efficiently the design, diagnosis and operation of complex industrial plants. Among the application areas covered are the following: hardware synthesis, industrial plant layout design, fault diagnosis, process control, image analysis, computer communication, electric power systems, intelligent control, robotics, and manufacturing systems. The book is appropriate for the researcher and the professional. The researcher can save considerable time in searching the scattered technical information on engineering expert systems. The professional can have readily available a rich set of guidelines and techniques that are applicable to a wide class of engineering domains.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume are the Applications papers presented at ES 2000, the Twentieth SGES International Conference on Knowledge Based Systems and Applied Artificial Intelligence, held in Cambridge in December 2000. The scope of the Application papers has expanded over recent years to cover not just innovative applications using traditional knowledge based systems, but also to include applications demonstrating the whole range of AI technologies. These papers continue to illustrate the maturity of AI as a commercially viable technology to solve real world problems. This is the eighth volume in the Applications and Innovations in Intelligent Systems series. The series serves as a key reference as to how AI technology has enabled organisations to solve complex problems and gain significant business benefits. The Technical Stream papers from ES 200 are published as a companion volume under the title Research and Development in Intelligent Systems XVII.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While expert systems technology originated in the United States, its development has become an international concern. Since the start of the DENDRAL project at Stanford University over 15 years ago, with its objective of problem-solving via the automation of actual human expert knowledge, significant expert systems projects have been completed in countries rang ing from Japan to France, Spain to China. This book presents a sample of five such projects, along with four substantial reports of mature studies from North American researchers. Two important issues of expert system design permeate the papers in this volume. The first concerns the incorporation of substantial numeric knowledge into a system. This has become a significant focus of work as researchers have sought to apply expert systems tech nology to complex, real-world domains already subject to statistical or algebraic description (and handled well at some level in numeric terms). A second prominent issue is that of representing control knowledge in a manner which is both explicit, and thus available for inspection, and compatible with the semantics of the problem domain.

This book introduces expert systems for problem solving in urban planning and describes the way in which heuristic knowledge and rules of thumb of expert planners can be represented through computer programs. The book presents practical applications of expert systems for solving many important urban planning problems, particularly those issues that many practicing planners face in their daily operations. Problems and issues discussed are grouped in the following categories: - Land Use Planning - Transportation Planning - Site Selection and Analysis - Environmental Planning - Conflict Mediation and Legal Disputes - Future Developments and Directions Expert Systems: Applications to Urban Planning will benefit both urban planners who wish to learn how this new technology might be applied to their daily work as well as researchers in expert systems seeking new ideas for systems design.

For the ES2001 Application Stream, a paper is acceptable even if it describes a system that has not yet been installed, provided the application is original and the paper discusses the kind of things that would help others needing to solve a similar problem. Papers have been selected to highlight critical areas of success - and failure - and to present the benefIts and lessons learnt to other developers. This volume contains sixteen papers describing deployed or emerging applications in a range of diverse areas: business and commerce, engineering, manufacturing, knowledge and information management, and music.
