This Manual is the product, as it ought to be, of class-room work, but it has not been tested with successive classes. Under the circumstances, it is the best that could be done. From books, Prendergast's idea of a definite speed standard of attainment has been most helpful. Sweet's Primer of Phonetics gave the clue to analysis of sounds. Many, many methods have been examined, and the student may find nothing that seems to him new, for it is possible to parallel many of these ideas with those from other sources.
