Book excerpt: Excerpt from Africa and the Brussels Geographical Conference The object of the Author in publishing this work has been to promote, as far as lay in his power, an undertaking which will hereafter do honour to the intelligence of the present century, and which, in his opinion, is pregnant with benefits to the various branches of the human family, whether the most advanced in the paths of civilisation, or the most behind-hand. The special duty which he had to perform at the Conference which gave birth to this undertaking, placed it in his power to gain, perhaps, the most intimate insight into its object and tendencies, and to determine, with some degree of certainty, the Scope of its movements. Nevertheless, he feels it necessary to state that, in. Acquitting himself of this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Exact heights, distances or sizes, small industries, and unimportant places. Wherever any definite comparisons are made, they are intended only for reference, and not to be learnt; and comparisons between the size of African and British cities have been avoided, as the conditions of native life make them only misleading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography of Africa The facts recorded have been derived from a variety of sources, including the accounts of the best-known travellers, and papers published in scientific and other periodicals, both - English and foreign. Of works relating to Africa as a whole and general books of reference the following, in par ticular, have been consulted: Mr. A. H. Keane's Africa, in the new issue of Stanford's Compendium; Dr. W. Sievers's Afrika, published by the Leipzig Bibliographical Institute; Mr. Keltie's Partition of Africa, and Statesman's Year-book for 1896; Mr. A. Silva White's Development of Africa, with the series of maps by Mr. Ravenstein; Mr. G. G. Chisholm's Handbook of Commercial Geography, and Longman's Gazetteer; and Mr. Keane's Ethnology in the Cambridge Geographical Series; while for the chapter on the Sahara M. Schirmer's work on that region has been of great assistance, and for South Africa, Professor Wallace's Farming Industries of Cape Colony. Professor Supan's sketch of A Century of Exploration, published in Petermann's Mitteilungen for 1888, also deserves special mention. Much care has been taken to avoid inaccuracies, and it is hoped that any which may have crept in are not serious. Information regarding such will be welcomed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Regional Geography of Africa and Europe, Vol. 3 This book is the third of a series of four intended to cover the geography course of a Secondary School for the four years leading up to and including the year in which an examination of matriculation standard is taken. The Americas were taken in the first book, and Asia and Australia in the second, leaving Africa and Europe as the continents for study in the third year. Thus each year's work includes a continent in both northern and southern hemispheres, an arrangement which facilitates the abundant use of comparison and contrast. The British Isles are rather fully treated, and this is done deliberately in order to lighten the work of the succeeding year. Indeed, one great advantage of the arrangement of the continents adopted in this series is that the pupils have covered the whole field of regional and general geography at the end of the year prior to that in which they would normally sit for a First Public Examination, i.e. an examination of matriculation standard. In that year they have, therefore, abundant time to revise the whole without recourse to cramming. There may be some criticism of the wisdom of publishing a book on Europe at a time when the new frontiers of many European States have not been fixed. The publication of this volume has been much delayed on that account, but the demand for its appearance is so insistent that it has been decided to issue it without further delay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Belgian Congo and the Berlin Act It is the aim of this work to examine in the crucial instance of the history of the Independent State of the Congo the defects of the Berlin Act, and to indicate the amendments which must be made in that international compact if it is to serve the high purposes for which it was destined, the extension to central Africa of the benefits of civilization and freedom of trade. This limitation of purpose has involved the omission in the historical sketch of the vivid detail of individual heroism and achievement in which the record of the Congo State abounds, but it has also justified the decision not to enter into particulars of the acts of cruelty committed upon natives under the State regime. The exposure of these crimes was a public duty, honourably fulfilled in England, during the period of the agitation to secure the reform of the administration, but since Belgium, under King Albert, has accepted in principle all the reforms urged by Viscount Grey, it is permissible to refrain from entering minutely into the investigation of these deplorable events. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial Geographical Readers: Africa and Australasia Of all the tropical lands of the world, for seven-tenths of its area lie within the Torrid Zone. Over a great part of its area it practically knows no winter, and so may be relatively described as the winterless continent.' It is an elevated continent, and might be broadly described as one vast tableland, bordered round with maritime ranges, which form the seaward edges of the highlands. It is simple and regular in its outline. NO other continent is so rounded and compact, and on that account so difficult of access. It might therefore be described as the inaccessible continent.' All round the sixteen thousand miles of its coast there is one unbroken line, Without great peninsulas or deep gulfs. The land sends out no arms; the sea wears out few large bays. The mountains lie chiefly near the coast and parallel with it. The lowlands form a coast fringe which is generally low and unhealthy. Judged by its surface, its rocks and its soils, Africa might also be called the stable continent.' In other continents. The seaboards are more or less subject to movements Of upheaval or subsidence. Africa has scarcely any of these movements. The coast has sunk between the Nile Delta and the Gulf Of Sidra, and on the seaboards Of Morocco and Of the Red Sea parts Of the coast have risen. With these exceptions, the coast is stable. Earthquakes are limited chiefly to the Atlas Moun tains, while on the west side the volcanic system is restricted to the Bight of Biafra. On the east side, however, there is much more evidence Of volcanic action. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
