Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly original and innovative analysis focuses on the morphosyntax of dialects comprising Italy, Corsica and the Italian and Romansch-speaking areas of Switzerland. The empirical base used in the book includes a wealth of previously unknown or understudied data from a variety of Romansch dialects, whilst the theoretical framework is extremely sophisticated and up-to-date. Linguists of all genres will be fascinated by Manzini and Savoia’s radical conclusion: they claim that their work suggests a unification of morphology and syntax.

This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume presents a collection of papers of recent generative work on Modern Greek morpho-syntax. The book is divided into three parts. Part I of the book deals with argument alternations, part II with clitics and part III with the syntax and semantics of free relatives. The book will be interesting for scholars working on Greek but also in theoretical linguistics, as it exemplifies how the study of Greek feeds the development of generative theory. The issues discussed in the book are currently highly relevant for the development of a satisfactory theory of comparative syntax as well as the interface between syntax and morphology and syntax and semantics. Thus the analyses put forth here will contribute to the elaboration of such a theory and to our understanding of cross-linguistic variation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exponence refers to the mapping of morphosyntactic structure to phonological representations, a research area which is not only highly controversial, but also approached in fundamentally different ways in theoretical morphology and phonology. This volume brings together leading specialists from morphosyntax and morphophonology. The authors address common problems, questions and solutions in both areas, and formulate a coherent research program for exponence which integrates the central insights of the last decades and provides important new challenges for the future. The book is aimed at phonologists, morphologists, and syntacticians of all theoretical persuasions at graduate level and above.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Syntax within the Word provides a multifaceted look into the syntactic framework of Distributed Morphology (DM) within the Minimalist program. For those unfamiliar with the theory, this monograph provides an overview of DM and argues its strengths. For those more familiar with DM, this monograph provides analyses of familiar data much of which has not been treated within the framework: argument selection, stem allomorphy and suppletion, nominal compounds in English (feet-first vs. *heads-first), and the structure of the verb phrase. This monograph also proposes a future for the theory in the form of revisions to DM including: the elimination of readjustment rules, a new economy constraint (Minimize Exponence) that triggers fusion of functional heads, and a feature blocking system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grammars of natural languages can be expressed as mathematical objects, similar to computer programs. Such a formal presentation of grammars facilitates mathematical reasoning with grammars (and the languages they denote), as well as computational implementation of grammar processors. This book presents one of the most commonly used grammatical formalisms, Unification Grammars, which underlies contemporary linguistic theories such as Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) and Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). The book provides a robust and rigorous exposition of the formalism that is both mathematically well-founded and linguistically motivated. While the material is presented formally, and much of the text is mathematically oriented, a core chapter of the book addresses linguistic applications and the implementation of several linguistic insights in unification grammars. Dozens of examples and numerous exercises (many with solutions) illustrate key points. Graduate students and researchers in both computer science and linguistics will find this book a valuable resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains ten papers discussing issues of the relation between syntax and morphology from the perspective of morphologically rich languages including, among others, Indo-European languages, indigenous languages of the Americas, Turkish, and Hungarian. The overall question discussed in this book is to what extent morphological information shows up in syntactic structures and how this information is represented. The authors adopt different theoretical frameworks such as the Derivational Theory of Morphology, Distributed Optimality, Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar, Lexical-Functional Grammar, Lexical Decomposition Grammar combined with Linking Theory and OT-like constraints, Paradigm-Based Morphosyntax as well as the Principles and Parameters Approach of Generative Grammar.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard view of the form-meaning interfaces, as embraced by the great majority of contemporary grammatical frameworks, consists in the assumption that meaning can be associated with grammatical form in a one-to-one correspondence. Under this view, composition is quite straightforward, involving concatenation of form, paired with functional application in meaning. In this book, we discuss linguistic phenomena across several grammatical sub-modules (morphology, syntax, semantics) that apparently pose a problem to the standard view, mapping out the potential for deviation from the ideal of one-to-one correspondences, and develop formal accounts of the range of phenomena. We argue that a constraint-based perspective is particularly apt to accommodate deviations from one-to-many correspondences, as it allows us to impose constraints on full structures (such as a complete word or the interpretation of a full sentence) instead of deriving such structures step by step. Most of the papers in this volume are formulated in a particular constraint-based grammar framework, Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar. The contributions investigate how the lexical and constructional aspects of this theory can be combined to provide an answer to this question across different linguistic sub-theories.
