Burnell on Civil Engineering, and specially on Hy draulio Engineering, first published about thirty years ago, have enjoyed an enduring reputation. But many changes, and many advances, have been made in the interval, if not so much in the principles, certainly in the practical development, of Works of Engineering; and the publishers have been induced to submit to me those treatises for revision, with instructions, at the same time, to expand and to supplement them with material embracing the most modern practice of engineers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Principles and Practice of Levelling: Showing Its Application to Purposes of Civil Engineering, Particularly in the Construction of Roads The figure of the earth is not exactly that of a sphere, but of an oblate Spheroid flattened at the poles the length of the equatorial diameter being 7924 miles, and that of the polar diameter 7898 miles. For our present pur pose, it is sufficiently correct to consider it as a Sphere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Civil Engineering The tables of the strength of materials at the end of the volume give, as regards iron and stone, average and extreme results only. Detailed information as to the strength of different kinds of stone and iron is given in the course of the text, under the proper headings. I have, throughout the book, adhered to a systematic arrange ment as far as was practicable, and have only departed from it in a few instances, when it became necessary to introduce questions that had arisen, or facts that had been ascertained, after the completion of the part of the work to which they properly belonged. In drawing up the table of contents and the alphabetical index care has been taken to show where such detached pieces of information are to be found. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Field Book for Civil Engineers Chapter VI. treats of construction, consequently here, among other things, are introduced methods of setting out the work and computing quantities. The difficulties which the young engineer experiences in setting slope stakes, were kept vividly in mind when writing this chapter. It is believed that the subject is presented in such a simple manner, and so fully illustrated, that he can easily comprehend it, and make ready use of the methods explained. Chapter VII., on Frogs and Switches, is from the pen of my esteemed friend and former student, Lewis C. Weldin, C. E., Assistant Engineer Pennsylvania Railroad. Mr. Weldin's twenty years' experience in the engineering department of this famous highway, qualifies him to present, with the authority of an expert, this subject in a most practical manner. By adopting a notation slightly different from that of other writers under this head, he has, in many cases, obtained results much simpler than any hitherto published, and he has increased the value of his work by the introduction of numerous formulas and examples, selected from his extensive practice. I therefore desire to express here my acknowledgments to Mr. Weldin for this valuable chapter. The book contains all the necessary tables for field use. Among them are included tables of natural trigonometric functions, sines, cosines, secants, cosecants, tangents, cotangents, versed sines, and exsecants, as well as tables of radii, long chords, squares, cubes, functions of a one-degree curve, and numerous others.
