Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Massachusetts Indian Language The languages of the American Indians, however little value may be attached to them, as the source of what is frequently (though without much discrimination) called useful knowledge, have for some time deeply engaged theattention of the learned in Europe, as exhibiting nu merous phenomena, if the term may be applied, the know ledge Of which will be found indispensable to a just theory of speech. It is 'true, indeed, that we have long had our systemsof universal grammar, or in other words our the ories of language, as, deduced from the small number of European and Oriental tongues, which have been the sub jectof investigation with scholars; just as in the physi cal sciences we have had, for example, our theories of chemistry, founded upon the comparatively small number of phenomena, which had been Observed in past ages. Butthe discovery of numerous facts of the most surpris ing character in that science, even within our own me mory, has compelled the, chemists of the present age to reexamine the Old, and resort to new theories and from thegreat advances made in Comparative Philology in the present age, particularly by means of an extensive ao quaintance with the unwritten dialects of barbarous nations, there is reason -to believe that some important modifications are yet to be made in our theories of language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abenaki Indian Legends, Grammar and Place Names While the language which Mr. Masta expounds is still spoken by many of the Indians of his tribe to-day, French is even more widely used and English is likewise spoken by a large number of individuals. It is inevitable that in another generation there will be still fewer speakers of the si-francis Abenaki language so that this little book, as time goes on, will embody the crystallization of this native American tongue by one whose generation marks the passing of the period when it still retained a great deal of its aboriginal vigor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammar of the Language of the Lenni Lenape or Delaware Indians The next performance that appeared on a comprehensive scale on the subject of languages was, the mithridates, the glory of our science. I have spoken of it at large in my Report to the Historical Committee, made in the year 1819, on the progress then made in the investigation com mitted to me respecting the character and grammatical forms of the languages of the American Indians-ii. Excellent as the Mithridates was at the time when it was published, such is the progress which the philological science has made since that period. That it would require to be almost entirely Written anew. But va'i'er is no more, and who will ven ture to assume his vacant place'l'?
