Book excerpt: The "International Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences (IPBN) Yearbook" is an Annual publication with the goal of providing the community of psychiatry and behavioural neurosciences in English speaking counties with a window of important works that were published either in non-English language journals or were published in English in local journals that are not readily available to the World community. The IPBN Year Book helps the English speaking community by making these works available, as well as making sure the non-English speaking publishing scientists have wider exposure to their work. The current issue readily dispels the assertion that if a paper was not published in English it was not worth translating. Much of this work reflects special aspects of the disorder for the local population. It is paramount for the understanding of psychiatry to know what is common to all cultures and what varies between communities.

Book excerpt: The idea of the International Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences (IPBN) was born as a result of the many occasions where, in the course of working on review articles or meta-analyses (MA) the author frequently encountered papers that needed to be included but were never translated into English. Usually an English abstract is available but this is never sufficient for the purposes of a detailed critical review or a close examination of the data as in meta-analyses. Most researchers simply ignore the published work and is observes the review or the MA uses English as a limiting term in the initial searches for relevant literature, thus weeding out all works done all over the world in other languages. While this is unfortunate, it is understandable as it is usually very expensive to accurately translate such data papers. Furthermore, while working on reviews or MAs one rapidly discovers the very many important works that were not published in English.

The role of culture in mental illness is increasingly being recognised, and the misconceptions that can occur as a result of cultural differences can lead to misdiagnoses, under or over-diagnosis. This second edition of the Textbook of Cultural Psychiatry has been completely updated with additional new chapters on globalisation and mental health, social media and tele-psychiatry. Written by world-leading experts in the field, this new edition provides a framework for the provision of mental health care in an increasingly globalised world. The first edition of the Textbook of Cultural Psychiatry was commended in the BMA Book Awards in 2008 and was the recipient of the 2012 Creative Scholarship Award from the Society for the Study of Psychiatry and Culture.
