The forests grow in areas that are annually flooded by large rivers during mean periods of up to 8 months and at depths of up to 10 m. Despite this severe stress, these forests consist of over 1,000 species and are by far the most species-rich floodplain forests worldwide. The trees show a broad range of morphological, anatomical, physiological, and phenological adaptations that enable them not only to survive the adverse environmental conditions, but also to produce large amounts of biomass when the nutrient levels in water and soils are sufficiently high. This is the case in the floodplains of white-water rivers, which are used for fisheries, agriculture, and cattle-ranching but which also have a high potential for the production of timber and non-timber products, when adequately managed. Latest research on ecophysiology gives insight how tree species adapt to the oscillating flood-pulse focusing on their photosynthesis, respiration, sap flow, biochemistry, phenology, wood and leave anatomy, root morphology and functioning, fruit chemistry, seed germination, seedling establishment, nitrogen fixation and genetic variability. Based on tree ages, lifetime growth rates and net primary production, new concepts are developed to improve the sustainability of traditional forest managements in the background of an integrated natural resource management. The ecosystem service value is not taken in to account in the Nation's GDP and thereby, never influenced the decision making bodies of the Government towards sustainable ecosystem management efforts. This PA is also highly damaged by incessant disturbances to fauna, flora assemblages and their micro-ecological intricacies. This study is an effort to reorient the policy priorities so as to effectively conserve our precious heritage for the future generations.

Plywood trade, mostly from Asian sources, has soared forty-fold and now equals our domestic production. Log imports, though, have decreased drastically from about 100 million board feet (log scale) in the 1950's to 30 million currently. Much of the world timber trade now is in the form of processed material. Many more tropical wood species and species groupings are being made available to U.S. processors. Most of these have been well known for many years on the European markets. This interest in supplemental supplies from overseas is in both softwoods and hardwoods. An extensive foreign literature has described the properties and uses of tropical woods, but much of it is no longer readily available. In this country the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory, over the years, issued 'Information Leaflets' or 'Foreign Wood Series' reports on some species of importance. But many of these are now out of print. The most recent comprehensive document, 'Properties of Imported Tropical Woods, ' contained a description of about 100 tropical genera.
