The public, in turn, demanded champions who reflected and defneded their ideals. Beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swifter than Mercury, and stronger than Hercules, Wonder Woman embodied all the positive values of the 1950s. To celebrate the decade, this volume features several never-before-reprinted stories that show the mighty Amazon facing off against menacing robots, aliens, and giants; teaming up with Robin Hood and the Justice Society of America; revealing the origins of her golden lasso, tiara, and invisible plane; and trying her hand at different careers! Often dangerous, sometimes humorous, but always uplifting, Wonder Woman's adventures in the 1950s exemplify her fortitude, perseverance, and compassion. Join us in honoring Diana of Themyscira's legacy with this collection of tales curated from All-Star Comics, Sensation Comics, and the original Wonder Woman series, written and illustrated by Robert Kanigher, Harry G. Peter, and other talented creators from this classic era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Shuri, and Black Widow. These four characters portray very different versions of women: the superheroine, the abuse victim, the fourth wave princess, and the spy, respectively. In this in-depth analysis of female characters in superhero media, the author begins by identifying ten eras of superhero media defined by the way they portray women. Following this, the various archetypes of superheroines are classified into four categories: boundary crossers, good girls, outcasts, and those that reclaim power. From Golden Age comics through today's hottest films, heroines have been surprisingly assertive, diverse, and remarkable in this celebration of all the archetypes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, science was rapidly advancing, and so were scientific opportunities for women. Modern science fiction films reflected these simultaneous social developments. This book proposes that the social ideology of the 1950s, which was partly concerned with gender issues, saturated the B science fiction films of that era and inspired a new appreciation for the role of women in scientific advancements and other social achievements. Drawing on feminist literary and cultural theory, the author argues that the emergence of the modern American science fiction film in 1950 and the situation of post-World War II female scientists together created a film genre. That genre was explicitly amenable to exploring the tension between a woman's place in her home and her place in the work force, particularly in scientific fields. Early chapters provide a general introduction to the science fiction genre and specifically describe 1950s B science fiction films as they resonate with concerns proper to feminist theory. Subsequent chapters offer detailed, historically situated readings of 10 B science fiction films from the 1950s that feature women in science. The cinematic representations of female scientists are compared and contrasted with real female professionals of the time, illuminating the changing gender dynamics reflected in popular film in the 1950s. Films analyzed include Rocketship X-M, It Came from Beneath the Sea, Them!, Tarantula, The Deadly Mantis, Beginning of the End, Kronos, Cat-Women of the Moon, World Without End, and Queen of Outer Space.
