Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women in Industry: A Study in American Economic History This volume is, therefore, an attempt to carry on the investigation from the point at which it was left four years ago. The continuation of the study was made possible in the first instance through the assist ance of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and to the late Carroll D. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Women in Modern Industry: Look inside the book: “Two justices of the peace, the mayor or other head officer of any city (etc.) and two aldermen ... may appoint any such woman as is of the age of 12 years and under the age of 40 years and unmarried and forth of service ... to be retained or serve by the year, week or day for such wages and in such reasonable sort as they shall think meet; and if any such woman shall refuse so to serve, then it shall be lawful for the said justices (etc.) to commit such woman to ward until she shall be bounden to serve.”—Statute of Labourers, 1563. ...It is a special feature of women’s employment that, unlike the work of men, who for the most part have to labour from early youth to some more or less advanced age, women’s work is subject to considerable interruption, and is contingent on family circumstances, whence it comes about that women may not always need paid work, but when they do they often want it so badly that they are ready to take anything they can get.

Book excerpt: "Women in Modern Industry" by B. L. Hutchins is a book that gives a sketch or outline of the position of working women, with special reference to the effects of the industrial revolution on her employment, taking "industrial revolution" in its broader sense, not as an event of the late eighteenth century, but as a continuous process still actively at work. The author has aimed at description rather than theory. Some of the current theories about women's position are of great interest, and he makes no pretense to an attitude of detachment in regard to the. The question of the child in the industry at first occupied attention almost to the exclusion of women. But the one led naturally to the other. The woman in the industry could no longer be ignored: she had become an economic force.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women in Industry: A Bibliography Amongst the varied activities of the Women's Industrial Council there is no branch of our work so full of surprises as that which endeavours to supply enquirers with useful informa tion about industrial women. Not only do these questions throw an intimate light on the nature of the problems which are occupying the thoughts and discussions of students of social conditions, but the search for material available to solve these problems discloses much that is unexpected. It is to meet some of the needs of these enquirers and to reveal some of the discoveries we have made that the work of compiling this biblio graphy has been undertaken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Employment of Women: In the Middle and Lower Ranks I have not thought it necessary to make much change in the text of this treatise, as it appeared in the edition published by me anonymously now thirteen years ago. I have, however, added the returns of the census of 1861 to the statistics given in Chapters VIII. and IX.; and I could not omit to notice the remarkable advance that has taken place, during these years, in public opinion and in legislation, on the relative position of the sexes - an advance that has surpassed my expectation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
