Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most valuable aspect of religion," writes Robert Lawrence Smith, "is that it provides us with a framework for living. I have always felt that the beauty and power of Quakerism is that it exhorts us to live more simply, more truthfully, more charitably." Taking his inspiration from the teaching of the first Quaker, George Fox, and from his own nine generations of Quaker forebears, Smith speaks to all of us who are seeking a way to make our lives simpler, more meaningful, and more useful. Beginning with the Quaker belief that "There is that of God in every person," Smith explores the ways in which we can harness the inner light of God that dwells in each of us to guide the personal choices and challenges we face every day. How to live and speak truthfully. How to listen for, trust, and act on our conscience. How to make our work an expression of the best that is in us. Using vivid examples from his own life, Smith writes eloquently of Quaker Meeting, his decision to fight in World War II, and later to oppose the Vietnam War. From his work as an educator and headmaster to his role as a husband and father, Smith quietly convinces that the lofty ideals of Quakerism offer all of us practical tools for leading a more meaningful life. His book culminates with a moving letter to his grandchildren which imparts ten lessons for "letting your life speak."

Book excerpt: Silicon Valley icon and bestselling author Guy Kawasaki shares the unlikely stories of his life and the lessons we can draw from them. Guy Kawasaki has been a fixture in the tech world since he was part of Apple's original Macintosh team in the 1980s. He's widely respected as a source of wisdom about entrepreneurship, venture capital, marketing, and business evangelism, which he's shared in bestselling books such as The Art of the Start and Enchantment. But before all that, he was just a middle-class kid in Hawaii, a grandson of Japanese immigrants, who loved football and got a C+ in 9th grade English. Wise Guy, his most personal book, is about his surprising journey. It's not a traditional memoir but a series of vignettes. He toyed with calling it Miso Soup for the Soul, because these stories (like those in the Chicken Soup series) reflect a wide range of experiences that have enlightened and inspired him. For instance, you'll follow Guy as he . . . • Gets his first real job in the jewelry business--which turned out to be surprisingly useful training for the tech world. • Disparages one of Apple's potential partners in front of that company's CEO, at the sneaky instigation of Steve Jobs. • Blows up his Apple career with a single sentence, after Jobs withholds a pre-release copy of the Think Different ad campaign: "That's okay, Steve, I don't trust you either." • Reevaluates his self-importance after being mistaken for Jackie Chan by four young women. • Takes up surfing at age 62--which teaches him that you can discover a new passion at any age, but younger is easier! Guy covers everything from moral values to business skills to parenting. As he writes, "I hope my stories help you live a more joyous, productive, and meaningful life. If Wise Guy succeeds at this, then that's the best story of all."

Book excerpt: Question: What do our kids need? Answer: They need wisdom. "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom." Proverbs 4:7 Designed for parents or teachers to use with children from K-5-through Grade 4, twenty-three lessons illustrate qualities of wisdom and godliness. Each lesson is presented in a simple format with illustrations to capture the attention of the child, and supplemented at the back of the book with suggestions for teaching the lesson. Every child of God - both adults and children - should work hard to show these traits more and more, because we love Jesus and want to be like him. That's easier said than done, isn't it? We struggle with sin every day, and we will fail. The lessons remind us that when we do, we will find forgiveness and the grace to continue to get wisdom at the foot of the Cross.

Book excerpt: A deeply informed exploration of what Stoic ideas have to offer us today Stoicism is the ideal philosophy of life for those seeking calm in times of stress and uncertainty. For many, it has become the new Zen, with meditation techniques that help us face whatever life throws our way. Indeed, the Stoics address a key question of our time: how can we be masters of our fate when the outside world threatens to unmoor our well-being? In Stoic Wisdom, Georgetown philosophy professor Nancy Sherman, an expert in ancient and modern ethics, shows what a practical modern Stoicism really looks like. Drawing on the wisdom of Stoic thinkers Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and others, Sherman paints a portrait that uncovers the true subtlety and power of Stoic ideas. That portrait reveals a truth often ignored: that the Stoics never thought self-sufficiency was only about rugged self-reliance and mental discipline. We are at home in the world, they taught, when we are connected to each other in cooperative efforts. While mastery of one's self is essential, we also must draw on our deepest relationships for true strength and resilience. Bringing these ancient ideas to bear on 21st century environments-from Silicon Valley to first responders in a pandemic, to soldiers on the battlefield-Sherman shows how Stoicism can both prepare us for an uncertain future and help us cope with traumatic events. Stoic Wisdom will appeal to anyone feeling helpless or looking for deeper, meaningful strength and goodness in addressing life's biggest and smallest challenges.

Book excerpt: Let wellness innovator “Yeah Dave” (featured in The New York Times and O, The Oprah Magazine) share the experience of our elders, a mix of history, wisdom, and joie de vivre, which is our most precious resource. Elder Americans in their eighties, nineties, and even hundreds, have survived the Holocaust, endured the Great Depression, fought in World War II, lived through the Civil Rights Movement, and endured countless booms and busts. And yet, unlike other parts of the world where elders are respected and revered, so many American elders tend to be lonely and feel irrelevant, without a voice or presence in American culture. The elders need our attention and love—and we need their stories and wisdom. The table of contents includes: FEEL YOUNG FOREVER HOW TO HEAL YOUR RELATIONSHIPS BE HAPPY (RIGHT THIS SECOND) CHERISH YOUR MARRIAGE (BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE) THE CURE FOR LONELINESS “SCREW,” LAUGH, CELEBRATE (EVEN AT FUNERALS) HOW TO FIND MORE TIME FEEL INSTANTLY SUCCESSFUL AND MORE! Dave Romanelli is on a journey to meet and listen to the stories of Americans who have seen (and lived) it all! One person he met is a 103-year-old who began driving a horse and buggy, then a Model A Ford, and now a yellow Smart Car, who says, “The first hundred years were the hardest. Everything after that is a breeze.” Another new friend is a ninety-year-old who lost four grandparents, both parents, and three siblings in Auschwitz, and is a reminder to all of us to wake up and be grateful. This is a small book that will have a powerful impact!
