Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second fully revised and extended edition of “Zoonoses - Infections Affecting Humans and Animals” covers the most important pathogens impacting both human and animal public health and debates current developments in this interdisciplinary field from a One Health perspective. Following a "setting" approach, the individual chapters each review zoonoses occurring in a specific group of animals, such as production animals, pets or wildlife, or in a defined ecosystem. A focus is put on zoonoses emerging along the food chain and on antibiotic resistance as an increasing challenge in infectious disease management. Special interest chapters debate non-resolved and currently hotly debated zoonoses, foremost COVID-19, influenza, Crohn/paratuberculosis and chronic botulism, also taking into account the economic and ecological aspects of zoonotic disease outbreaks. This second edition includes brand-new chapters on emerging pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, chlamydia and helminths, it reviews historic zoonoses, provides additional insights into pathogens of reptiles and highlights significant neglected tropical diseases. This reference work is a must-read for researchers, health professionals and students in Microbiology and Veterinary Medicine. The book’s ambition to spread knowledge on zoonoses and on strategies on how to tackle them complies with the United Nations Sustainable Goals, in particular Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-Being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black's Veterinary Dictionary has been a bestseller for over 80 years. It is an essential reference tool for all with a professional or leisure interest in the care of animals. Much more than a list of veterinary terms, its practical approach ensures that readers gain an insight into the signs and symptoms of common, and less common, diseases, their diagnosis and treatment. For the 22nd edition much new and updated information has been included, reflecting the numerous developments that have taken place in animal care and husbandry, and welfare. There is greatly expanded coverage of topics relating to popular breeds of dog and cat, and the inheritable conditions that might affect their health. Advances in medicine, surgery and diagnostic techniques; descriptions of newly identified diseases such as Schmallenberg virus; the resurgence of old scourges such as TB in cattle, and ongoing enzootic infections such as bird flu are included in this new edition. The growing risk of exotic diseases such as heartworm being imported following the relaxation of travel arrangements for dogs and cats is reflected in new entries. Notes on many new species being farmed or kept as companion animals are among the thousands of topics covered. Whether your interest is in cats or cattle, horses or hamsters, puppies or pigeons, the A-Z of veterinary matters is covered in Black's Veterinary Dictionary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, laboratory identification of parasites has relied upon various phenotypic procedures that detect their morphological, biological, and immunological features. Because these procedures tend to be time-consuming and technically demanding, molecular methods based on nucleic acid amplification technologies have been increasingly utilized for rapid, sensitive, and specific characterization of parasites. The large number of original and modified molecular protocols that have been developed over the years creates a dilemma for those attempting to adopt the most appropriate protocol for streamlined identification and detection of human pathogenic organisms of interest. Part of a four-volume collection, Molecular Detection of Human Parasitic Pathogens provides a reliable and comprehensive resource on the molecular detection and identification of major human parasitic pathogens. This volume contains expert contributions from international scientists involved in human parasitic pathogen research and diagnosis. Following a similar format throughout, each chapter includes: A brief review on the classification, biology, epidemiology, clinical features, and diagnosis of an important pathogenic parasitic genus/group An outline of clinical sample collection and preparation procedures and a selection of representative stepwise molecular protocols A discussion on further research needs relating to improved diagnoses of major human parasitic pathogens This versatile reference on molecular detection and identification of major human parasitic pathogens is an indispensable tool for upcoming and experienced medical, veterinary, and industrial laboratory scientists engaged in parasite characterization. It is also suitable as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in parasitology.

Book excerpt: Human cystic hydatid disease (CHD) caused by the larval stage (hydatid cyst) of the dog tapeworm, E. granulosus, is a major infection with worldwide distribution and variable geographical incidence. The present study evaluates the two most popular techniques, sandwich ELISA and Latex techniques for the diagnosis of human hydatidosis by antigen detection. In the present study, crude protoscolex antigen (CPA) detection was carried out through several steps including the preparation of protoscoleces antigen, production; purification and labeling of rabbit IgG pAb. The Latex technique and ELISA tests have been found to be high sensitive and suitable for the antigen detection of cystic hydatid disease. In conclusion, antigen detection assay is superior and more sensitive than antibody detection assay, especially in diagnosing active infection where hydatid cysts are predominant. Antigen detection assay might be a useful approach for assessment of the efficacy of treatment especially after removal of the cyst. Further studies are recommended to improve the diagnostic efficacy of antigen based ELISA method. Sandwich ELISA and Latex techniques appear to be sufficiently sensitive assays for the detection of human echinococcosis.
