Book excerpt: Based on a detailed study of Australia's earliest civil court records - a million handwritten words about daily life and trade - Debt, Seduction and Other Disasters covers the turbulent years in the penal colony. This was a period when starvation was barely averted, emancipated convicts contended with one another to become wealthy through trade, and Aborigines fought for their land. Soldiers and governors struggled for power, culminating in the overthrow of Governor Bligh, the only military coup on Australian soil. In this important and entertaining book, Kercher: shows the remarkable egalitarianism of life in the colony, even for serving convicts and married women discusses the invention and legal consequences of tickets of leave and the central role of law in creating the local version of freedom reveals details of daily social and economic life unavailable elsewhere: the seduction cases and sexual scandals; details of the wheat farm at Woolloomooloo; the problems of the grain growers at the Hawkesbury provides unique information about working conditions of: convicts the seal killers in New Zealand and Macquarie Island sailors the very few Aborigines who worked alongside Europeans details:the first case in Australia in which an Aborigine sued (he lost) the first recorded sale of a wife (at Windsor in 1811; sale void) the case in which Mary Reibey was alleged to have blown up the bakery next door (she won) the sharp practices of Tommy the Banker, Dick the Needle and the petty bankers who deliberately wrote their documents in fading ink describes the lives of the convict women who lived with officers but were abandoned explodes the myth that rum was a major currency and explains the use of alternative currencies, such as wheat, and establishes the crucial role of pigs in town life.

Book excerpt: A finalist in the USA Best Book Awards historical fiction category, "Coffee with Poe" brings Edgar Allan Poe to life as never before. Orphaned at the age of two, Poe is raised by John Allan—his abusive foster father—who refuses to adopt him until he becomes straight-laced and businesslike. Poe, however, fancies poetry and young women. He becomes engaged to Elmira Royster as a teenager, but the engagement is broken after her father intercepts Poe’s letters. The contentious relationship with John Allan culminates in a violent altercation, which causes Poe to leave his wealthy foster father’s home to make it as a writer. Poe tries desperately to get established as a writer but is ridiculed by the "Literati of New York." The Raven subsequently gains Poe renown in America yet he slips deeper into poverty without the support of John Allan, only making $15 off the poem’s entire publication history. Desperate for a motherly figure in his life, Poe marries his first cousin who is only thirteen. John Allan has remarried by this time and when Poe visits him on his deathbed, he is refused an interview because his second wife believes Poe is after an inheritance. Thereafter, Poe lives his last years in abject poverty while suffering through the deaths of his foster mother, grandmother, and young wife. Poe’s health begins failing and he has bouts of paranoid delusions. In a cemetery Poe becomes engaged to Helen Whitman, a dark poet who is addicted to ether, wears a small coffin about her neck, and conducts séances in her home. Her mother thinks the impoverished poet is after her money and demands that Poe sign a rare prenuptial agreement. The engagement is soon broken off because of Poe’s drinking. In his final months Poe is again engaged to Elmira Royster after a joyful reunion, yet his health is in a downward spiral. Just before their marriage Poe disappears and is later found delirious and wearing another person’s begrimed clothes. He dies a few days later, whispering his final words: "God help my poor soul."

Book excerpt: The most comprehensive of its kind, Nursing Theorists and Their Work, 8th Edition provides an in-depth look at 39 theorists of historical, international, and significant importance. Each chapter features a clear, consistent presentation of a key nursing philosophy or theory. Case studies, critical thinking activities, and in-depth objective critiques of nursing theories help bridge the gap between theory and application. Critical Thinking Activities at the end of each theorist chapter help you to process the theory presented and apply it to personal and hypothetical practice situations. A case study at the end of each theorist chapter puts the theory into a larger perspective, demonstrating how it can be applied to practice. A Brief Summary in each theorist chapter helps you review for tests and confirm your comprehension. A Major Concepts & Definitions box included in each theorist chapter outlines the theory’s most significant ideas and clarifies content-specific vocabulary. Each theorist chapter is written by a scholar specializing in that particular theorist’s work, often having worked closely with the theorists, to provide the most accurate and complete information possible. Beginning chapters provide a strong foundation on the history and philosophy of science, logical reasoning, and the theory development process. Diagrams for theories help you visualize and better understand inherently abstract concepts. Pictures of theorists, as well as a listing of contact information for each individual, enables you to contact the source of information directly. Theorist chapters have been reviewed and edited by the theorist, validating the accounts set forth in the text for currency and accuracy. An extensive bibliography at the conclusion of each theorist chapter outlines numerous primary and secondary sources of information, ideal for both undergraduate and graduate research projects. A new chapter introduces the theorist Afaf Meleis and covers her Transition Theory that has helped shape the theoretical development of nursing. Points for further study at the end of each chapter direct you to assets available for additional information. Need to know information is highlighted in at-a-glance summary boxes throughout to help you quickly review key concepts. Personal quotes from the theorists help you gain insight and make each complex theory more memorable. Updated references include only published works to ensure accuracy and credibility.
