Book excerpt: What the Locusts Have Eaten references the second chapter of Joel where God is calling the Israelites to repentance. Their land has been destroyed as a result of their sin and rebellion. God calls for them to repent, turn from their ways, and seek Him. He promises to restore what the locusts have eaten. This book begins by asking the question how does a couple that is in love and desirous of a lifetime together on their wedding day get transformed into a couple that despises each other and gets a divorce just a short time later? How do we go from one extreme to the other? The author contends that there are three things that we need to embrace for restoration in our relationships and joy in our lives. It starts with an understanding of what a covenant relationship is and isn't. A covenant is an unbreakable promise that is itself the basis of the relationship. The second key is looking for God to fill our needs and not position, power, money, things, or someone else. This takes away the frustration of unfulfilled expectations from others, especially that of the spouse. And finally, the action that helps make this possible is forgiveness. Starting with our earliest memories of where we were hurt, mistreated, or offended and offer forgiveness to others as we have been forgiven by our heavenly Father. Understanding that what someone else owes us pales in comparison to the debt we owe. Through this, God can restore relationships and take what was destroyed and make it better than it was before.

Book excerpt: In 1997, Atlanta businessman Os Hillman began writing a daily e-mail devotional featuring 4-minute meditations on faith and work life. For men and women in the workplace, this was just what they needed: practical help in applying their faith to their work life; encouragement to live out their faith; empowerment to be more effective in their jobs; support to become powerful witnesses at work; and examples of others who experienced the presence of God at work. It has since become one of the fastest growing e-mail devotions on line. Now Hillman has written his second book of devotions. TGIF includes 365 all-new daily meditations, plus a bonus topical index to find devotions that relate to specific topics such as motives, handling disappointments, adversity, integrity, finances, decision making and much more. Whether for individual quiet times, Bible study groups or workplace groups, these daily devotions will help men and women fulfill God's call on their lives in the workplace.

Book excerpt: A profound exploration of how to hold on to hope when our unchanging faith collides with a changing culture, from two respected Christian storytellers and thought leaders. “Offers neither spin control nor image maintenance for the evangelical tribe, but genuine hope.”—Russell Moore, president of ERLC As the pressures of health warnings, economic turmoil, and partisan politics continue to rise, the influence of gospel-focused Christians seems to be waning. In the public square and popular opinion, we are losing our voice right when it’s needed most for Christ’s glory and the common good. But there’s another story unfolding too—if you know where to look. In Gospelbound, Collin Hansen and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra counter these growing fears with a robust message of resolute hope for anyone hungry for good news. Join them in exploring profound stories of Christians who are quietly changing the world in the name of Jesus—from the wild world of digital media to the stories of ancient saints and unsung contemporary activists on the frontiers of justice and mercy. Discover how, in these dark times, the light of Jesus shines even brighter. You haven’t heard the whole story. And that’s good news.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A good education will land you a good job,” “Be an entrepreneur/Start something in a garage or dorm room” and even “Jesus saves” are narratives that collapsed for the millennial generation (born 1982-2002). These narratives, amongst many similar social and religious ones, have lost their meaning and power as millennials question all authorities and struggle to flourish in a world come of age. With their needs for community and success, a strong spirituality, and believing that their gifts should be recognized and can make a difference, millennials increasingly find meaning and purpose outside the church. As they face economic uncertainty, reduced career prospects, unceasing change, as well as civic, global, and ecological uncertainties, however, a large number of millennials are overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety and depression. Caught between hope and fear, millennials leave the church with their values of personal transformation, purpose, community, spirituality, social transformation and ecological awareness. Ironically the church often holds the same values. The Millenial Narrative is written for pastoral leaders who want to welcome millennials, both inside and outside their congregation. The book draws on the wisdom of the prophetic Book of Joel as a narrative worth living into. Drawing on Joel’s three chapters, The Millenial Narrative empowers pastoral leaders to: • Facilitate the work of mourning Millennials are facing; • Envision a spiritual community that can welcome millennials; • Introduce a compassionate God that restores and indwells as the Spirit; • Reflect on God’s judgment through the lens of accountability; and, • Support and encourage millennials to be a blessing to others. In addition, pastoral leaders will receive a sermon outline and material for adult education.

Book excerpt: God’s Word Leads Us to God’s Heart Hebrew Word Study: Revealing the Heart of God is a devotional book unlike any you’ve ever read. Most Hebrew word study books read like a dictionary, not really explaining the Hebrew words in light of specific Bible passages. Hebrew Word Study by Chaim Bentorah combines an in-depth look at the meanings of a variety of scriptural words and phrases in the original Hebrew with a down-to-earth application for our daily Christian experience. Guided by Chaim’s expertise in biblical languages, you will examine not just word definitions, but also the origins of words, their place in the culture and idioms of the day, and even their emotional context. With the author’s anecdotes and stories from the Bible and ancient Jewish literature, the meanings of these words and passages become even more vivid. Each of the ninety word studies in this book will encourage and strengthen you in your relationship with God. As you search the depths of God’s Word, you will see just how beautiful the Scriptures are, and most of all, you will see the beauty of God Himself and come to love Him all the more.
