Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Fenning has spent three decades advising multinational companies on volatile geopolitics and severe security crises. He was CEO of the British firm Control Risks for 14 years. His career coincided with the glory years of globalization, the rise of China, the tumult of the Middle East wars, a new vicious form of terrorism, the transforming impact of digital technology, and America's retreat from leadership. Offering him a rare insight into what happens when people and organizations come under enormous stress, it dispelled any illusions that the world is ordered, predictable, or fair. But amid the chaos and upheaval, he also found humanity and humor. In a whirlwind tour that takes us from the battlefields of Iraq to the back streets of Bogotà, from the steamy Niger delta to the chill of Putin's Moscow, he looks back with wit and insight on the people and places he has got to know, while also offering some timely thoughts about the relationship between risk and danger in a terrifyingly changeable world.

Book excerpt: The surprising and illuminating look at how Tolkien's love of science and natural history shaped the creation of his Middle Earth, from its flora and fauna to its landscapes. The world J.R.R. Tolkien created is one of the most beloved in all of literature, and continues to capture hearts and imaginations around the world. From Oxford to ComiCon, the Middle Earth is analyzed and interpreted through a multitude of perspectives. But one essential facet of Tolkien and his Middle Earth has been overlooked: science. This great writer, creator of worlds and unforgettable character, and inventor of language was also a scientific autodidact, with an innate interest and grasp of botany, paleontologist and geologist, with additional passions for archeology and chemistry. Tolkien was an acute observer of flora and fauna and mined the minds of his scientific friends about ocean currents and volcanoes. It is these layers science that give his imaginary universe—and the creatures and characters that inhabit it—such concreteness. Within this gorgeously illustrated edition, a range of scientists—from astrophysicists to physicians, botanists to volcanologists—explore Tolkien’s novels, poems, and letters to reveal their fascinating scientific roots. A rewarding combination of literary exploration and scientific discovery, The Science of Middle Earth reveals the hidden meaning of the Ring’s corruption, why Hobbits have big feet, the origins of the Dwarves, the animals which inspired the dragons, and even whether or not an Ent is possible. Enhanced by superb original drawings, this transportive work will delight both Tolkien fans and science lovers and inspire us to view both Middle Earth—and our own world—with fresh eyes.

Book excerpt: The landmark trilogy of cutting-edge science, international politics, and the real-life ramifications of climate change—updated and abridged into a single novel More than a decade ago, bestselling author Kim Stanley Robinson began a groundbreaking series of near-future eco-thrillers—Forty Signs of Rain, Fifty Degrees Below, and Sixty Days and Counting—that grew increasingly urgent and vital as global warming continued unchecked. Now, condensed into one volume and updated with the latest research, this sweeping trilogy gains new life as Green Earth, a chillingly realistic novel that plunges readers into great floods, a modern Ice Age, and the political fight for all our lives. The Arctic ice pack averaged thirty feet thick in midwinter when it was first measured in the 1950s. By the end of the century it was down to fifteen. One August the ice broke. The next year the breakup started in July. The third year it began in May. That was last year. It’s a muggy summer in Washington, D.C., as Senate environmental staffer Charlie Quibler and his scientist wife, Anna, work to call attention to the growing crisis of global warming. But as they fight to align the extraordinary march of modern technology with the awesome forces of nature, fate puts an unusual twist on their efforts—one that will pit science against politics in the heart of the coming storm. Praise for the Science in the Capital trilogy “Perhaps it’s no coincidence that one of our most visionary hard sci-fi writers is also a profoundly good nature writer—all the better to tell us what it is we have to lose.”—Los Angeles Times “An unforgettable demonstration of what can go wrong when an ecological balance is upset.”—The New York Times Book Review “Absorbing and convincing.”—Nature

Book excerpt: Remembered Earth Short Stories Volume 2: A Collection L1 Or Bust: A Cislunar Short Story: Book 3 There's a place for everyone, and everyone better know his place, at least aboard a spacecraft. I felt like that too, until something seemed to be going wrong on the mission to save the first fuel depot built at the Earth-Moon system's L1 point. There was a problem, a total systems failure kind of problem, and the Commander and his First Officer seemed to not be making any progress solving it. And if they didn't solve it soon, the mission would be lost. And that meant, I would be lost in space along with them. As the company's head engineer, I thought I could help if given the chance. Problem was, the commander didn't want my help. But I couldn't just sit there. Guidance Box: A Cislunar Short Story: Book 4 Those that can, do, those that can't, sit it out. But some times those that do can make a mistake. And if they don't have the integrity to face up to their mistakes, they may make the wrong decision and try to cover it up. That could cost lives. The mission to test out a new lunar cargo and personnel lander had asked for volunteers and Richie and I volunteered. We weren't suppose to do anything, we, along with a few others, were just dead weight, representing future passengers. But something went wrong with the prototype lander and we crashed into the lunar surface. All were alive but not all were safe. Richie and I had been too slow to make it to the control room and were stranded in our spacesuits. Problem was, it was the commander's mistake that stranded us and he didn't want to admit it, but Richie and I couldn't just sit tight and wait for him to eventually call for a rescue, our limited air supply wouldn't allow it. The author's near-future universe and series, Remembered Earth: Cislunar, consists of adventures that will feature the probable science and technology of the next hundred years. Hard Science Fiction - Old School.

Book excerpt: This book is produced as if written by five family members, each producing content in 20 year blocks, from the year 2000 to the year 2100. It is the thoughts of those family members on 26 topics, first laid down by their Great, Great Grandfather, ending with the collating of the notes by the last person in the family. He is about to travel with his family, along with 4 others, to a distant planet some 5 light years away in the hope of colonising a new world. As he and the others are watching the celebrations on Earth on New Years Eve of 2099 from their space craft in orbit around the world, they see something that changes their outlook completely. ABOUT THE AUTHOR 1. The author is an 80 year old male who has spent half of his life being shot at, stoned and spat at, during the 40 years he spent in the Royal Air Force. During that time he had many postings, 17 in all, with 6 of them being overseas. In the latter part of his service career he produced and edited Qty. 11 NATO Interoperability publications that entailed him travelling from his UK base to any of the nations in the NATO Central Region countries, including USAFE. He was doing that approximately twice per month for 6 years and spending a week at each location. 2. Once retired from serving 'Queen and Country', he became a self employed builder, mostly refurbishing old barns into desirable residences. 3. Since he became an 'Old Age Pensioner, ' he has spent time writing Qty. 3 books which are; a) 'A - I'm an Armourer, B - I'm an Armourer.' (Life story). b) 'Now That I'm Redundant' (A military 'who-dun-it'). c) This one, which is not militarily focussed. 4. This book is produced by someone, supposedly, in the year 2100. He gathers the facts written down by 5 family members down the timeline from the year 2000 until the year 2100. It has been produced as factual up to the present day (Mid 2022). From then on it is written with the authors own thoughts about the future and what he gleaned from the 'University of Life.' Enjoy!
