Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands are very sensitive ecosystems, functioning as a habitat for many organisms. Protection and regeneration of wetlands are of great importance in ecological research and in nature conservation. A huge amount of research has been done on the hydrology, plants and animals in wetlands. Knowledge about soil organisms and soil ecological processes of wetlands is still lacking. This knowledge is a prerequisite for landscape planning purposes or climate change predictions. In the case of climate change, trace gas emissions from wetlands are of great interest. The authors provide an overview of the state-of-the-art on soil ecology in wetlands. The book is divided into the following main chapters: 'Wetlands as habitats for soil organisms', 'Soil ecological processes in fens and floodplains', 'Carbon and nitrogen dynamics in soils with different water regimes' and 'Trace gas emissions'.

Book excerpt: The impetus for this volume was the 2nd International Wetlands Conference which was held in June, 1984 at Trebon, Czechoslovakia. An overview of the worlds wetlands was one of the themes of the conference and it was decided that a useful follow-up would be a publication on the same topic. The initial goal was to cover as many of the worlds wetlands as possible in one volume and to have an emphasis on wetland ecology, biota, classification, and management. Individuals who made presentations at the Trebon confer ence were asked to prepare chapters and the editors also solicited other contributions. For a variety of reasons, the initial goal has been difficult to reach, especially coverage of the entire globe, and it has been necessary to publish the contributions in more than one volume. Volume 1 represents the com pletion of the first phase of the project and it covers most of the Western Hemisphere, Australia, most of Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Mediter ranean region, and Papua New Guinea. Volume 2 will contain chapters on Western Europe, Northern Europe, Central Europe, most of northern and It is our hope that Volume western Asia, the Middle East, and Indonesia. 2 will appear in the near future and, if possible, a third volume will be published if authors can be secured to cover areas such as the Far East, other parts of the Indo-Pacific region, and New Zealand.

Book excerpt: This book brings together, for the first time, information on various wetland classification systems and wetland inventories from around the world, outlining regional, national and local wetland classifications developed in Africa, Australia, Canada, China, Europe, India, South America and the USA. Oriented towards the conservation and management of wetlands, these existing national and regional classification systems have been useful in providing an essential base for the development of an international system. The volume also reviews various attempts at drawing up an inventory of wetlands in different parts of the world, ranging from field and literature surveys to highly sophisticated efforts using aerial photography and satellite imaging. Audience: Workers in wetland ecology, especially those working on classification, inventory, conservation, or management of wetlands at the local, national, regional or international levels.

This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the geology, land use history, palaeoecology, ecology and conservation of peatlands (fens and bogs) in The Netherlands. The volume provides detailed accounts that, together, give a representative picture of the studies that have been carried out in the Dutch mires over the past 25 years. Contents: Chapter 1: Verhoeven -- Introduction. Chapter 2: Pons -- is a comprehensive geographic and pedological account of peat formation in space and time in the western coastal plain. Chapter 3: Casparia and Streefkerk -- is a detailed description of the various stages of development from fen to bog of the Bourtanger Moor. Chapter 4: Borger and Stol -- details the history of peat draining, digging and dredging in The Netherlands and Flanders. Chapter 5: Barkman -- deals with bog remnants in the eastern Netherlands and northwestern Germany. This chapter also includes data on oligotrophic heath pools which have a vegetation that is similar to that found in bogs. Chapters 6: Den Held; 7: Van Wirdum et al.; 8: Koerselman and Verhoeven -- are chapters on vegetation, synecology and nutrient dynamics of fens and chapter 9: Wiegers -- focuses mainly on terrestrializing fens that are so characteristic of the western Netherlands where they presently occur in turf ponds created by peat dredging in former centuries. Chapter 10: Vermeer and Joosten -- concludes the volume with a treatment of problems with mire conservation and management.
