Book excerpt: Through a case study of a Buddhist village in the southeastern part of Bangladesh, this research examines the issues of Western education and modernization within the socio-political context of Bangladesh. This study exclusively focuses on the Barua community. It adopts an anti-colonial discursive framework. This framework offers both theoretical and practical responses to the issues of education and modernization. The anti-colonial approach acknowledges the value of local knowledge, cultural history and the daily life experiences of the people in understanding social reality. The research participants confirmed that the education they received is contradictory to the Buddhist culture and traditions. They reflected that the Buddhist educational values are different from the Western educational values. Furthermore, the participants mentioned that Buddhist education advocates the principles of compassion and generosity for the welfare of all creatures. It does not believe in domestication. The participants also stated that this scheme towards massive modernization tends to disconnect the Barua community from the practice of Buddhist ethics. They pointed out that the Western form of education pulled community members away from their own social environment and economy. This education created an image of Western materialistic ways of life as well as forced them to adopt the views of the dominant power in the name of modernization. The restoration of Buddhist ethics and educational values in the country is a great challenge for the minority Barua community. It was observed that their political representation was absent at the national level, although community resistance for social identity and cultural rights existed within the case study village.

Book excerpt: Through the case study of Gono Unnayan Prochesta (GUP), Voluntary Organization (VO) operating in rural southwestern Bangladesh, this thesis explores the role of non-formal education for empowerment and socio-economic development. The issues examined are the mobilization process and the grassroots organization of disadvantaged women, education for regenerative agriculture, functional literacy and women's health. The case study focuses mainly on two womens groups. During the field work part of the study, most men were away from the villages in pursuit of salaried jobs or carrying out their small trades. The study adopted the framework of analysis proposed by Moser (1993) about the productive, reproductive and community roles of women in the context of their practical and strategic needs. The data indicates that due to the extreme poverty situation in the study area, addressing practical needs is considered more urgent by the women who were interviewed. Furthermore, they indicated that the center-based functional literacy training is less effective than the home-based training related to health and agriculture issues. It also was observed that the gosthi (lineage) shanskriti (cultural) and para (neighborhood) identities are essential elements in mobilizing the women's groups in the villages. After 25 years of GUP's activities, grassroots women's organizations are yet to be self-sustaining in the villages of Rajoir. The women participants in this study understand the importance of learning how to sign their names for access to small loans, although they indicate that further functional literacy does not meet their immediate practical needs. They are aware of the value of literacy and formal education for their children. Even then, the immediate projects they finance with small credits and loans available to them are still distributed alone traditional gender roles; seed money for starting small businesses for their sons or dowry needs.

Book excerpt: Educating Monks examines a minority Buddhist community in Sipsongpanna, a region located on China's southwest border with Myanmar and Laos. Its people, the Dai-lue, are "double minorities": They are recognized by the Chinese state as part of a minority group, and they practice Theravada Buddhism, a minority form within China, where Mahayana Buddhism is the norm. Theravada has long been the primary training ground for Dai-lue men, and since the return of Buddhism to the area in the years following Mao Zedong's death, the Dai-lue have put many of their resources into providing monastic education for their sons. However, the author's analysis of institutional organization within Sipsongpanna, the governance of religion there, and the movements of monks (revealing the "ethnoscapes" that the monks of Sipsongpanna participate in) points to educational contexts that depend not just on local villagers, but also resources from the local (Communist) government and aid form Chinese Mahayana monks and Theravada monks from Thailand and Myanmar. While the Dai-lue monks draw on these various resources for the development of the sangha, they do not share the same agenda and must continually engage in a careful political dance between villagers who want to revive traditional forms of Buddhism, a Chinese state that is at best indifferent to the continuation of Buddhism, and transnational monks that want to import their own modern forms of Buddhism into the region. Based on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with Dai-lue monks in China, Thailand, and Singapore, this ambitious and sophisticated study will find a ready audience among students and scholars of the anthropology of Buddhism, and religion, education, and transnationalism in Southeast and East Asia.
