Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lights Which God Hath Shewed Us: A Thanksgiving Discourse, Delivered Nov; 28, 1861; In the West Spruce Street Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia The Church is not the State, and the State is not the Church, yet they may, and one day will both compre hend precisely the same elements. Every member of the church may be a citizen, and every citizen may be a member of the church. They may not invade each others given spheres of service, and yet they are bound to each other by ties powerful and sacred, and are constantly affecting each others interests. The Church cannot annul an iniqui tous enactment of the State, but she may, through the steady operation of her hallowed instrumentalities, so reach the public mind and heart as to bring about the much needed reform. The State may not, formally annul any decree of the Church, even one consigning atheists and heretics to the flames, but she may see to it that such a law remain a dead letter on the ecclesiastical Statute book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sovereignty of God, the Sure and Only Stay of the Christian Patriot in Our National Troubles: A Sermon Preached in the Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, Sept. 14, and in the West Spruce Street Church, September 28, 1862 Dear Sir - Your Sermon on the Reign of God. As connected with our present troubles, deserves a much larger publicity than can result from twice preaching. It ought to be read and considered, as well by those who love God and their country, as by those who are too apt to forget him. It would seem to be a vain hope to escape from our entangle ments, and to exhibit the uprising of a great nation, until we sincerely and humbly adopt the motto, In God is our trust. We therefore request that the manuscript may be placed at our disposal for publication. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Gilded Age, Rittenhouse Square was home to Philadelphia's high society, with more millionaires per square foot than any other American neighborhood except New York's Fifth Avenue. Established by William Penn in 1682 as the South-West Square and renamed after astronomer David Rittenhouse in 1825, Rittenhouse Square and its environs changed from an isolated district of brickyards and workers' shanties into the city's most elegant and elite neighborhood between 1845 and 1865. The brownstone and marble mansions on the square itself were inhabited by the city's wealthiest and most prestigious families, with names like Biddle, Cassatt, Drexel, Stotesbury, and Van Rensselaer. As Philadelphia's upper classes fled to the suburbs in the early 20th century, their mansions were replaced by skyscrapers or taken over by cultural institutions like the Philadelphia Art Alliance and the Curtis Institute of Music. While only a few original residences remain on Rittenhouse Square, it is still the center of a lively upscale neighborhood.
