Book excerpt: There is a magic to music—a feeling created that removes one from the humdrum constraints of everyday life to a wonderful make-believe world where, as famous lyricist E. Y. (Yip) Harburg put it in ‘Over the Rainbow’, troubles melt like lemon drops and dreams really do come true. In this book, you’ll meet the men of the early twentieth century who wrote the most wonderful creative music the world has ever known. Their music was matched by the brilliance of the lyricists, who were indeed the poets of the modern age. These men created a superb anthology of popular music, a canon that today is justifiably known as the Great American Songbook.

Book excerpt: A young boy, Travis, moves from cotton farms in isolated areas to a small cotton farm a short walking distance down a dirt road to the very small but thriving town of Keiser, Arkansas. Three families live in his yard. Two of the families are black, and one of these families has four children about the same age as him. Most of this book centers around the relationships and activities between Travis and these families. Ben Whistle is a craggy old neighbor who provides the drama. The purpose of writing this book is to indicate an enjoyable and interesting era that vanished long ago, never to return.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few historical images are more powerful than those of wartime London. Having survived a constant barrage of German bombs, the city is remembered as an island of courage and defiance. These wartime images are still in use today to support a wide variety of political viewpoints. But how well do such descriptions match the memories of those who survived the blitz? Jean Freedman interviewed more than fifty people who remember London during the war, focusing on under-represented groups, including women, Jews, and working-class citizens. In addition she examined original propaganda, secret government documents, wartime diaries, and postwar memoirs. Of particular significance to Freedman were the contemporary music, theater, film, speeches, and radio drama used by the British government to shape public opinion and impart political messages. Such bits of everyday life are mentioned in virtually every civilian's experience of wartime London but their interpretations of them often clashed with their government's intentions. By exploring the differences between wartime documentation and postwar memory, oral and written artifacts, and the voices of the powerful and the obscure, Freedman illuminates the complex interactions between myth and history. She concludes that there are as many interpretations of what really happened during Britain's finest hour as there are people who remember it.

It was time to gather the last generation to tell their stories for Dixon’s book, The Vanishing Race... Representatives from nearly every reservation were assembled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viktor and Petka have been best friends since childhood and it’s not surprising that they went to summer camp. It is also not surprising that our heroes could not just spend the summer, because they are young and they have something that others do not have, boundless imagination and artifacts of the archaeologist’s grandfather. The book is mostly humorous, so don’t expect complicated mysticism from it.
