Book excerpt: John Hunt is a kind and gregarious man. His eyes twinkle and his face beams. He is a retired businessman and still retains that drive. I met John the summer of 2000. He came for the graduation ceremony of the crew of students that Jason had led, and we talked. Jason had a difficult course which is common for new instructors. The next summer Jason emerged as a solid leader and had a wonderful course. Several months later while on a climbing vacation in British Columbia Jason took a tragic fall. His familys reaction was to create a foundation in Jasons name that supported his love of the outdoors. The Jason William Hunt Foundation had had tremendous impact on many people especially young people in transition who want to expand their horizons. This happens in an outdoor setting lead by instructors like Jason. It happens every summer at the Wilderness School. Johns only son, Jason, will forever be twenty-four years old. My son John is twenty-five. Our sons like many young men seek adventure. Parents care deeply about their children and the fear of losing a child dwells in all of us. How does a parent cope with the tragic loss of their beloved child? Walking with Jason is a quest to trace Jasons brief life as a young man. John becomes the youthful adventurer and visits Jasons world. John seemingly falls through the looking glass and discovers a mysterious and wonderful world inhabited by troubled adolescents, craggy Thru-hikers, idealistic outdoor leaders and others who visit natures realm. Ultimately Johns odyssey is a very personal journey of self-discovery and gives us a compass bearing on how to deal with the sudden loss of a child. I will forever be connected to Jason, Danielle, Amy, Rosemarie and John. Thank you for generous hearts and concern for youth. Tom Dyer, L.C.S.W. Book excerpt: The Camino de Santiago is a 500 mile, historic pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. It is walked by thousands every year, both Christians and non-believers. To mark his 50th birthday, the brilliant Norwegian cartoonist Jason decided that walking the length of the Camino was what he needed to do. On the Camino is Jason’s memoir of that trek — 32 days and 500 miles from St. Jean Pied de Port to Finisterre, observing with the eye of an artist, chronicling both the good (people, conversations) and the bad (blisters, bedbugs). Full of quiet incidents, odd encounters, small triumphs, and the occasional setback, On the Camino is the latest graphic novel by a master cartoonist.

A cannon. A strap. A piece. A biscuit. A burner. A heater. A chopper. A gat. A hammer A tool for RULE Or, you can call it a gun. That’s what fifteen-year-old Will has shoved in the back waistband of his jeans. See, his brother Shawn was just murdered. And Will knows the rules. No crying. No snitching. Revenge. That’s where Will’s now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brother’s gun. He gets on the elevator, seventh floor, stoked. He knows who he’s after. Or does he? As the elevator stops on the sixth floor, on comes Buck. Buck, Will finds out, is who gave Shawn the gun before Will took the gun. Buck tells Will to check that the gun is even loaded. And that’s when Will sees that one bullet is missing. And the only one who could have fired Shawn’s gun was Shawn. Huh. Will didn’t know that Shawn had ever actually USED his gun. Bigger huh. BUCK IS DEAD. But Buck’s in the elevator? Just as Will’s trying to think this through, the door to the next floor opens. A teenage girl gets on, waves away the smoke from Dead Buck’s cigarette. Will doesn’t know her, but she knew him. Knew. When they were eight. And stray bullets had cut through the playground, and Will had tried to cover her, but she was hit anyway, and so what she wants to know, on that fifth floor elevator stop, is, what if Will, Will with the gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, MISSES. And so it goes, the whole long way down, as the elevator stops on each floor, and at each stop someone connected to his brother gets on to give Will a piece to a bigger story than the one he thinks he knows. A story that might never know an END…if Will gets off that elevator. Told in short, fierce staccato narrative verse, Long Way Down is a fast and furious, dazzlingly brilliant look at teenage gun violence, as could only be told by Jason Reynolds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jason Allen-Paisant grew up in a village in central Jamaica. 'Trees were all around, ' he writes, 'we often went to the yam ground, my grandmother's cultivation plot. When I think of my childhood, I see myself entering a deep woodland with cedars and logwood all around. [...] The muscular guango trees were like beings among whom we lived.' Now he lives in Leeds, near a forest where he goes walking. 'Here, trees represent an alternative space, a refuge from an ultra-consumerist culture...' And even as they help him recover his connections with nature, these poems are inevitably political. As Malika Booker writes, 'Allen-Paisant's poetic ruminations deceptively radicalise Wordsworth's pastoral scenic daffodils. The collection racializes contemporary ecological poetics and its power lies in Allen-Paisant's subtle destabilization of the ordinary dog walker's right to space, territory, property and leisure by positioning the colonised Black male body's complicated and unsafe reality in these spaces.

Book excerpt: Have you ever asked yourself, What I am doing here? What is my purpose in life? What is my plan? I am not talking about your career plan or your retirement plan. Moses, Mary, David, and Daniel in the Bible were ordinary people who were thrust into extreme adversities. Each had no idea what was in store for them. Each had their moments of doubt, discouragement, and despair. Their thoughts of how am I going to get through this? You are no different. Your personal blueprint is already designed. Each of you is a complex, high-performance machine with a great purpose to fulfill. I had no idea of these concepts or what my purpose was. I now know my purpose is to share my story with others and show how God is connected to each of us, every second. My wife and I are ordinary people. This is my full disclosure, my true story of how we overcame adversities that rocked us to the core of our human existence. Every obstacle was a ferocious lion attacking. Through dreams and visions I learned that Divine intervention was directing us through every aspect of our lives. My story and testimony are true. This reality-based storm took me to rock bottom. The experiences rebuilt me into the super-charged person that I am today. We overcame a mountain of debt We battled a recession that impacted three businesses We faced tax evasion and paid back hundreds of thousands to the IRS We survived a serious illness that took me to the threshold of my human demise We stopped the plague of generational abuse, hate, control and negativity You will meet the Lions. They are real. You have lions--money, health, stress, relationships, addiction, fear, acceptance, depression, anxiety. Every lion is ferocious. Learn how every lion was tamed and every mouth shut. The odds of us overcoming each adversity were a million to one. We were graced by miracles from God. You can overcome your lions. This story is confirmation that within a millisecond, anything is possible with Gods favor and grace.
