Book excerpt: With more than two million members and supporters, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is the world's largest animal-rights organization, and its founder and president, Ingrid Newkirk, is one of the most well-known and most effective activists in America. She has spearheaded worldwide efforts to improve the treatment of animals in manufacturing, entertainment, and elsewhere. Every day, in laboratories, food factories, and other industries, animals by the millions are subjected to inhumane cruelty. In this accessible guide, Newkirk teaches readers hundreds of simple ways to stop thoughtless animal cruelty and make positive choices. For each topic, Newkirk provides hard facts, personal insight, inspiration, ideas, and resources, including: • How to eat healthfully and compassionately • How to adopt animals rather than support puppy mills • How to make their vote count and change public opinion • How to switch to cruelty-free cosmetics and clothing • How to choose amusements that protect rather than exploit animals. With public concern for the well-being of animals greater than ever—particularly among young people—this timely, practical book offers exciting and easy ways to make a difference.

Book excerpt: Critical Theory and Animal Liberation is the first collection to approach our relationship with other animals from the critical or "left" tradition in political and social thought. Breaking with past treatments that have framed the problem as one of "animal rights," the authors instead depict the exploitation and killing of other animals as a political question of the first order. The contributions highlight connections between our everyday treatment of animals and other forms of social power, mass violence, and domination, from capitalism and patriarchy to genocide, fascism, and ecocide. Contributors include well-known writers in the field as well as scholars in other areas writing on animals for the first time. Among other things, the authors apply Freud's theory of repression to our relationship to the animal, debunk the "Locavore" movement, expose the sexism of the animal defense movement, and point the way toward a new transformative politics that would encompass the human and animal alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, we tend to react skeptically to claims about our access to the animal mind, the political importance of compassion, and the natural origins of community. However, such claims were widespread in the Restoration and eighteenth century, the long Age of Sensibility. Even so famous a skeptic as the Enlightenment philosopher David Hume wrote that "animals undoubtedly feel, think, love, hate, will, and even reason.” In The Animal Claim, Tobias Menely shows that for Hume and other thinkers of his time, the acknowledgment of creaturely voice was crucial to their theories of community. Looking primarily to the long eighteenth century in Britain, Menely argues that sympathy--including sympathy with animals--came to be regarded as a foundational resource of social relation, and that it fell to poets, in particular, to represent creaturely voice in the public sphere. Menely connects this development to new ideas of political community in Britain and the emergence of a viable discourse of animal rights in the age of legislative reform. The result is an original contribution to both animal studies and eighteenth-century scholarship.

Book excerpt: A collection of informative, diverse, evocative, and inspiring essays from over 50 vegan activists, educators, artists, and changemakers on the whys and wherefores of the vegan diet and lifestyle. Why should one go vegan? Is veganism the positive change the world needs? Vegan Voices: Essays by Inspiring Changemakers is a comprehensive collection of compelling testimonials about how our food choices are deeply connected to the pressing challenges and issues of our time. Areas covered include personal and global health; the devastation of animal agriculture to the environment; society's collective loss of compassion and connection to our kindred animals; and the desire for a world of greater peace, harmony, and inclusivity. The book points to the need for a cultural and spiritual transformation in which we embrace the commonalities between all living beings as a source of positive change and healing. Author and editor Joanne Kong has brought together the most inspiring and influential changemakers from around the world at the forefront of the vegan movement. They represent the great diversity of roles through which veganism has moved into the mainstream: activists, authors, speakers, athletes, entrepreneurs, community and event organizers, advocates for social and food justice, artists, filmmakers, medical and health professionals, environmental advocates, sanctuary owners, and more. The essays are organized into six sections: "Our Kindred Animals," "Around the Globe," "Activism," "Body and Spirit," "The Arts," and "A New Future." Vegan Voices fills the needs of a wide range of readers, from those new to exploring the plant-based lifestyle to longtime vegans and advocates. Many essays are deeply personal reflections that attest to how veganism has the power to touch our lives on many levels. The book can be a source of continuing inspiration and motivation for those desiring to create a world of greater compassion and equality.
