Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realistic Village Vignettes is the fifth book created by Village Display Tips, resources for collectors of miniature porcelain and ceramic villages. These books, as well as five Village Scaping DVDs, provide creative ideas and techniques to develop and enhance any village display. Whether creating an individual vignette or a mega display, there are hundreds of ideas included to improve any miniature village setting. For many collectors, lack of time and space has become a major challenge. Thus, a different solution to displaying favorite village pieces in small places has been sought. "Realistic Village Vignettes" - Book 1 of the Village Vignette Book Series - is a compilation of numerous village collectors from around the United States and Europe. The second book in the series is entitled "Stylistic Village Vignettes". They both concentrate on placing a single building or a series of related pieces into realistic or stylistic settings. Realistic Village Vignettes is based on natural settings. It offers several easy to create landscaping techniques to form actual scenes surrounding a prized village piece or pieces. There are also numerous water development treatments such as the creation of an icy stream, a rocky coast, or a sandy beach surrounded by rocky cliffs; plus numerous others ways to form a water scene. Backgrounds are a pleasing addition to a realistic vignette. They can substantially enhance a setting, whether the builder has an artistic talent or not. Realistic Village Vignettes provides insight into adding backgrounds to a vignette. There are numerous ideas to effectively condense a realistic display into a small footprint. Or, several individual vignettes can be coordinated and unified into a single display. Scatter several small vignettes throughout the house as a replacement for a large village layout. Ideas presented can also be merged into focal points within a mega display. The Christmas Holidays are not the only time that village settings can be appreciated. Ideas to showcase your favorites throughout the year are also provided. Since these vignettes don't take up much space, many can be left up longer, stored easily, revamped, or replaced by a spring, summer or fall display. Halloween has become extremely popular. Be prepared for those "Trick or Treaters". Realistic Village Displays also includes several ideas to showcase those intriguing pieces. And, there are ways to make a spooky display even if you do not collect a Halloween inspired village. Build a vignette around a special piece or select a theme and find a piece to illustrate it. Realistic Village Vignettes offers over 160 pages of helpful hints, ideas, tips and techniques to further enjoy a hobby of village collecting and displaying. No collector should be without this informative display resource. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stylistic Village Vignettes is the second book in the Village Vignettes Series, following Realistic Village Vignettes. This book takes a different path to displaying miniature porcelain and ceramic village pieces. Instead of creating a logical village scene found in the Realistic Village Vignettes book, Stylistic Village Vignettes combines elements such as other collectibles, containers, objects d'art, and more into fabulous vignettes conserving both space and time. Besides the traditional containers such as baskets, unique trays and elegant serving pieces found at fine home decor centers, family heirlooms, thrift store caste offs and garage sale finds can also enhance the proper village piece or pieces. Even if a lack of space or time prevents creating an extensive village setting, a village focused collage can still showcase your favorite village pieces. Christmas was the impetus for most village collections. There are numerous Christmas related suggestions, but there are also ideas for the smaller holidays such as Valentine's Day and Easter. Spring and Autumn are not forgotten, and of course, Halloween has its own chapter. A special chapter has also been included by Sue Chretien, a master at developing stylistic displays. She is constantly on the hunt for dramatic ways to enhance her vignettes - many of them featuring food related pieces finding their way into the kitchen and dining areas. In addition to Sue, over forty other village collectors have contributed to this excellent display resource, sharing their ideas; and providing creative inspirations as starting points for other collectors to appreciate their village pieces in a different way. They say a picture is worth 10,000 words. This book - as well as Realist Village Vignettes - are filled with excellent photographs depicting hundreds of ideas to implement. And even if a collector doesn't have the exact same pieces, many of these ideas can be tweaked using your favorite pieces. If space or time are limited, just about everybody has some flat space somewhere to showcase at least a couple of pieces, alone or in conjunction with a prized "something" passed down through the generations. In combination, they are worth much more than the sum of their parts. Therefore, if you find you no longer have the space, or the time, or the energy to plan and create an awesome village display scene, try developing a dynamic smaller Stylistic Village Vignettes. Book excerpt: Empowerment Evaluation in the Digital Villages analyzes a $15 million community change initiative designed to bridge the digital divide in East Palo Alto, East Baltimore, and San Diego. Involving a partnership between Hewlett-Packard, Stanford University, and three ethnically diverse communities, this initiative enabled its constituencies to build their own technology-oriented businesses, improve their education systems, and improve their economic health. While examining this large-scale, multi-site case, Fetterman highlights the potential for empowerment evaluation to build local capacity and sustain improvements within communities. He provides deep insights into key steps in empowerment evaluation by exploring the way that each of these phases took place in the digital villages. Additionally, the text provides evaluators with real-world stories and practical advice from the front lines. The Digital Village case also demonstrates the social value of combining corporate philanthropy, academic prowess, and community empowerment—highlighting the role of evaluation in this process.

Book excerpt: Birdville School opened in 1922 on the corner of two dirt roads at the edge of a fallow farm. Over the next 67 school years it witnessed, and influenced, the unfolding story of the town that grew up around it, amid flood, brushfire, blizzard, tornado, and earthquake; poverty and prosperity; war, peace, and cold war; and even the collapse of the earth beneath its foundations. Its auditorium and cafeteria hosted PTA meetings, plays, movies, concerts, basketball tournaments, holiday parties, Girl Scout and Boy Scout meetings, polio vaccination clinics, and war-time rationing registrations and scrap-collection drives. Local sand-lot softball, baseball, and football teams competed in the same surrounding fields that swarmed with gleeful children at recess, and that echoed with the roar of low-flying aircrafts snagging mailbags on their tail hooks. Among its staff were thespians, musicians, firemen, outdoorsmen, and athletes, including a singer who performed in the Coolidge White House, a candidate for the state legislature, an army medic, and a ball player who faced off against the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Pirates. By the time classes concluded for the last time in 1989, thousands of children - including the author - had benefitted from the care, instruction, and example of the Birdville School family. This book is a feeble tribute to those who made us who we are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cape Cod has a rich tradition of local lore, stretching back to a time before the Pilgrims arrived. Ancient Wampanoag legends like Granny Squannit and Princess Scargo are as familiar as tales of pirates and explorers, including "Black Sam" Bellamy and Donald Baxter Macmillan. Felines often blocked "Cat's Alley" in pursuit of food from fishermen's boats. The remnants of Billingsgate Island can be seen at low tide, and visits from Jenny Lind and Helen Keller contrast with the mysterious stories of the "Lady of the Dunes" and New England's Dark Day. Author Robin Smith-Johnson shares historic tales of shipwrecks, murders, hauntings and more from the Cape.
