Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greater Victorian Poets IT is impossible to define precisely, and often difficult to define at all, a period of literature. The political divisions commonly adopted are approximations, in many cases of the roughest kind. When we begin to ask what are the limits of the Elizabethan period, or of the period of Queen Anne, we find that the divisions which criticism can establish in literature by no means syn chronise with the time covered by the reigns of those sovereigns. Nevertheless, it requires but little reflection to Show that ex pressions of this kind, though never exact, generally convey a substantial truth. The movement of time is an abstract ex pression which means the movement of the human spirit in all its manifestations; and the movement of time is best marked by political events. Thus, when, with reference to literature, we speak of the age of Pericles or of Elizabeth, or of the period of the French Revolution, we mean that there was in those ages a movement in literature bearing conspicuously the impress of its connexion with the history of the time. No one can doubt that the marvellous literary activity of Athens in the fifth century was intimately connected with the events which made the city politically so prominent and so powerful; nor is it possible to deny that the great outburst of poetic genius in England in the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth centuries was an expression of a heightened and intensified national life. Naturally therefore, and not inappro priately, those periods of literature have been associated with the most prominent names of the time in politics. It is equally clear that the greatest historical event Since the Reformation had a profound influence upon literature, and that, for a; Qefiod. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Victorian Anthology IN the beginning of last May I delivered at the Mansion House, in connection with the University Extension Movement, an address upon Victorian poetry, to which I had from early days given much attention. Presently afterwards it was suggested to me that I should make a Victorian Anthology, and I agreed to do so, in the hope that I might bring together, for the benefit of my readers, a good many old friends, and enable them to form a good many new acquaintances. In forming the earlier portion of the selection, I have been much assisted by a manuscript Anthology made by me for my own use in the early sixties. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days With the Victorian Poets: Rossetti, Morris, Mrs. Browning A hot July day of 1871. The Chelsea streets refracted the scorching sunlight, with that peculiar sultriness common to low - lying districts: the river flowed with a metallic glitter, and no cool breath was wafted from its long sleek ripples, to temper or invigorate the sweltering air. The leaves of the London plane-trees, dulled with dust, endured the heat with a perceptible effort: for it was now between ten and eleven a.m., and the sun stood high in heaven. But in that solid, roomy, old-fashioned dwelling, No. 16, Cheyne Walk, with its "look of equal nobility and shabbiness," (known as Tudor House from the tradition that it had been a nursery-house for Henry VIII's children), there was no suggestion of the solstice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems From the Victorian Anthology The publishers have asked me to put together, under the title of Gems from the Victorian Anthology, some poems and extracts from poems which appeared in a collection they printed for me in 1902. In compiling a work of nearly six hundred octavo pages, a good many considerations had to be at tended to, over and above the personal likings of the compiler, such as the opinion of those he considered to be good judges, the desirability of representing various poetical schools, and so forth. In this little book I have attended to none of these considerations, but have selected simply poems and parts of poems which I particularly liked, in the belief that they will give pleasure to persons of similar tastes, bad or good.
