Book excerpt: Victor Rios grew up in the ghetto of Oakland, California in the 1980s and 90s. A former gang member and juvenile delinquent, Rios managed to escape the bleak outcome of many of his friends and earned a PhD at Berkeley and returned to his hometown to study how inner city young Latino and African American boys develop their sense of self in the midst of crime and intense policing.Punished examines the difficult lives of these young men, who now face punitive policies in their schools, communities, and a world where they are constantly policed and stigmatized. Rios followed a group of forty delinquent Black and Latino boys for three years. These boys found themselves in a vicious cycle, caught in a spiral of punishment and incarceration as they were harassed, profiled, watched, and disciplined at young ages, even before they had committed any crimes, eventually leading many of them to fulfill the destiny expected of them. But beyond a fatalistic account of these marginalized young men, Rios finds that the very system that criminalizes them and limits their opportunities, sparks resistance and a raised consciousness that motivates some to transform their lives and become productive citizens. Ultimately, he argues that by understanding the lives of the young men who are criminalized and pipelined through the criminal justice system, we can begin to develop empathic solutions which support these young men in their development and to eliminate the culture of punishment that has become an overbearing part of their everyday lives.

Book excerpt: Victor Gollancz was a teacher, publisher, author and campaigner who spent his life passionately trying to make people see the truth as he saw it. If it's as a publisher that he is remembered above all, nonetheless in many ways he epitomised the social conscience of the mid-twentieth century: he founded the Left Book Club, Save Europe Now and the Campaign Against Capital Punishment. For this biography, first published in 1987, Ruth Dudley Edwards had access to all the Gollancz family and firm papers, and produced an honest, searching work which not only reveals an extraordinary man but throws light on many of the political and social events of his times. 'Frequently gripping and always readable.' John Gross, Observer 'Consistently enthralling and a brilliant achievement.' Hilary Rubinstein, Spectator 'One of the fullest and richest portraits of a contemporary individual we have had.' Anthony Curtis, Financial Times 'I would trust anyone's life to Ruth Dudley Edwards.' Terence De Vere White, Irish Times

Book excerpt: Following on from the success of Victor Boys and Vulcan Boys, Tony Blackman, in collaboration with Anthony Wright, brings you Valiant Boys to complete the V Force set. This is a fascinating collection of personal accounts of operating BritainÕs first V bomber by aircrew and ground crew. The book tells the story from the aircraftÕs birth taking off from VickersÕ tiny airfield at Wisley near Brooklands to its premature death from fatigue. There are tales of testing atom bombs in the Australian desert, dropping hydrogen bombs in the middle of the Pacific and, as a complete contrast, attacking airfields with conventional bombs in Egypt during the very brief and abortive Suez campaign. We are reminded of how the Valiant provided the UKÕs first nuclear deterrent by always having some armed aircraft on stand-by twenty-four hours a day, supported by their air and ground crews, ready to be flown at a momentÕs notice on a one-way trip to launch an atomic war. Some Valiants were given a photographic role providing accurate images from high altitude and were used not only to gather military intelligence but also to survey the UK and countries overseas. Others were developed into flight refueling tankers breaking point to point records before enabling BritainÕs fighter aircraft to be refueled and fly anywhere in the world. This book completes Tony BlackmanÕs trilogy of the three V bombers. As Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Michael Beetham makes it clear in his foreword: ÔIt is good to have a book written by aircrew and ground crew telling their stories and how they operated the aircraft so that all these things are recorded and not forgotten.Õ Not as well known as the Vulcan and Victor, the Valiant is often overlooked; this book will go a long way to redress the balance.

Book excerpt: Victor is an old Volkswagen bus that has been abandoned, discarded, and left alone behind an old barn in the middle of a field that has tall weeds because his owner had bought a brand-new car. Victor has many little flaws, but nothing that a little tender, loving care could not mend. Victor is very lonely and is feeling sad and unwanted. Sometimes, some little boys come by and pretend to be driving him, which makes him happy. But other times, bigger boys come by and throw rocks at him, making him feel even worse. Then one day, a tow truck comes, hooks Victor up, and pulls him down the road backward. Victor wonders where he is going. Is he being taken to a junkyard to sit with all the other unwanted cars? Is he going to be taken apart piece by piece and used as spare parts? Is he going to be crushed for scrap metal? But then, he is pulled into a garage at a nice little family home. For the next several weeks, Victor is refurbished completely. He is now being used every Sunday to pick up happy boys and girls for church. Once again, Victor is feeling useful, handsome, and happy!
