Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marble deposits in Vermont are some of the richest in the world. Vermont's Marble Industry takes readers deep inside the quarries of the Green Mountain State to show how stone was sawed and raised from the earth to be cut, polished, and carved into monuments and structures that today are spread across the country. During the late 1800s, the marble industry flourished and the mighty Vermont Marble Company was started by a local family. The patriarch of the Proctor family built the Vermont Marble Company into the largest stone company in the world. They hired immigrant workers to fuel the company, and the region became a melting pot of nationalities. After World War II, demand for blocks of heavy dimension stone diminished and the slow demise of the Vermont Marble Company began. Vermont's Marble Industry proudly tells the history of the marble workers, their skilled craftsmanship, and the communities that relied on this industry.

By the early twentieth century, the Vermont Marble Company was considered the largest U.S. corporation in the world. Today, the region of southwestern Vermont that runs from Middlebury in the north to Dorset in the south is still called the Marble Valley, "? and visitors flock every year to tour the Vermont Marble Museum and the International Carving Studio and to picnic in the quarries. In this first comprehensive history, Mike Austin chronicles the hardships, religious lives, labor struggles and triumphs of the Marble Valley's workers and industrious settlers. Complete with excerpts from firsthand accounts and news clippings, this wide-scoping history gives an intimate portrayal of the men and women who shaped the Vermont Marble Valley and made it their home."

During the 1970s, more companies opened larger surface mines in Campbell County, and currently, there are 11 mines in the county. Wyoming coal is shipped to 36 states where 99.99 percent of it is used to generate electricity. This Coal In Campbell County Book tells about the story of coal mining in Campbell County, Wyoming. The United States uses approximately one billion tons of coal a year, with about 390 million tons coming from Campbell County, Wyoming. Since large-scale commercial coal production began in Campbell County in the mid-1970s, most coal companies have changed names, owners, and boundaries several times. To let those changes go unrecorded would be to lose the very beginning of coal in Campbell County.

Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Field Trip Guidebooks Series, Volume 362. Five (5) physiographic provinces are recognized in Vermont. They are (from west to east) the Taconic Highlands, the Champlain and Vermont Valley, the Green Mountains, the Piedmont, and the Northeast Highlands (Figure 1-1). Our travels will include stops in all but the Piedmont. The geology and nonmetallic mineral industries of these provinces will be briefly described. Quarrying of “true marbles” occurs today only in the Champlain and Vermont Valley province, whereas “verde antique marble” is found and quarried in the Green Mountains province. Slate, although once quarried extensively in the eastern Piedmont, is produced exclusively from rocks of the Taconic Highlands. Granitic plutons are primarily confined to the Northeast Highlands and thus the granite industry is located within this province. Scenery along the way will be enjoyed as a bonus as the field trip proceeds.
