Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Valley Dale Ballroom began as a stagecoach stop in the 1880s and later served as a tavern and overnight inn. The dance hall was added in the early 1920s, thus bringing about the birth of the Valley Dale Ballroom, or "The Dale." In the 1930s, the wisdom of the Peppe brothers' ballroom purchase and their connection to the neoteric music of that generation assisted in their cultivation of the big band era. Significant musical giants like Benny Goodman, Harry James, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and Dean Martin (before he knew Tommy Dorsey's vocalist Frank Sinatra) each appeared on that marvelous stage, while CBS and NBC broadcast nightly from the ballroom. After World War II ended, the ballroom was no longer the nightly spot for music it once was. War and soaring band costs ushered in different uses for the ballroom's survival; it was hosting rock bands while becoming a wedding and event facility.

Book excerpt: A long-lost, world-class amusement park … huge replicas of the world’s biggest wonders … a 1903 stage play with eight galloping horses. Columbus has had its share of odd attractions over the years. And scandals, too - the fake drug that led to the formation of the Food and Drug Administration … the 19th century pharmacist who loved to sunbathe nude atop his castle … the early visit of an airship that led to a riot. And many curiosities are still with us today – a neighborhood with 50 Frank Lloyd Wright-style homes … a blind, high school marching band … a company that makes burglar-proof burial vaults. Columbus Uncovered reveals dozens of the most-unusual chapters in our city’s history. You’ll find them all fascinating.

Book excerpt: Two professors and a preacher invented Columbus radio. It began with science experiments in classrooms and a minister's desire to expand beyond his churchgoing audience. By 1922, government licenses had been issued for WEAO at Ohio State University and WJD at Denison University. At this same time, a Baptist minister went on the air for an hour each Sunday morning using a 10-watt transmitter licensed as WMAN. In this story of Columbus radio, the work of the professors and the preacher will evolve into radio with advertiser-supported programs of information and entertainment. Three important radio stations will serve a growing Columbus radio audience in different ways: WEAO becomes WOSU, a national pioneer in using radio for teaching; WMAN becomes WCOL and in the 1960s is number one in audience size; and CBS affiliate WBNS becomes the class act of Columbus radio, retaining the major share of local listeners for many decades. Including many other stations of lesser influence, the illustrated stories of Columbus radio are told in this book.

Book excerpt: Columbus has long been known for its musicians. Unlike New York, San Francisco, Kansas City, Nashville, or even Cincinnati, however, it has never had a definable "scene." Still, some truly remarkable music has been made in this musical crossroads by the many outstanding musicians who have called it home. Since 1900, Columbus has grown from the 28th- to the 15th-largest city in the United States. During this period, it has developed into a musically vibrant community that has nurtured the talents of such artists as Elsie Janis, Ted Lewis, Nancy Wilson, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Dwight Yoakam, Bow Wow, and Rascal Flatts. But, in many instances, those who chose to remain at home were as good and, perhaps, even better.

Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of one of the most tumultuous periods in recent American history, as riots and demonstrations spread across the nation, the Tigers of poor, segregated East High School in Columbus, Ohio did something no team from one school had ever done before: they won the state basketball and baseball championships in the same year. They defeated bigger, richer, whiter teams across the state and along the way brought blacks and whites together, eased a painful racial divide throughout the state, and overcame extraordinary obstacles on their road to success. In Tigerland, Wil Haygood gives us a spirited and stirring account of this improbable triumph and takes us deep into the personal lives of these local heroes. At the same time, he places the Tigers’ story in the context of the racially charged sixties, bringing in such national figures as Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King Jr., and Richard Nixon, all of whom had a connection to the teams and a direct effect on their mythical season.
