Book excerpt: Through four decades of the Cold War, the responsibility for defending American airspace rested with an elite band of squadrons who operated the best fighter interceptors the world has ever seen. Equipped with Voodoos, Delta Daggers, Delta Darts and Phantom IIs, the huge frontline force of the 1960s and 70s has today been reduced to a handful of dedicated air defence units within the Air National Guard who fly Fighting Falcons and Eagles.

Book excerpt: The photos in this edition are black and white. Following the successful format of previous Specialty Press Military Photo Logbooks, this book offers readers an excellent photo compilation of all the great USAF Air Defense Command interceptors from the entire Cold War era. Beginning after World War II with the propeller-driven Northrop P-61 Black Widow and North American F-82 Twin Mustang, the Air Force's aerial intercept mission entered the jet age with the fabled North American F-86 Sabre, Northrop F-89 Scorpion, and Lockheed F-94 Starfire, all of which are still high-interest aircraft today. Colorful and unique mission-support airplanes such as the C-124, EB-57, EC-121 Constellation, and T-33 are included as well as the famed next-generation "Century Series" supersonic Air Force interceptors such as the McDonnell F-101B Voodoo, Convair's F-102 Delta Dagger and F-106 Delta Dart twins, and the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. All the great aircraft flown by the Air Defense Command are well-documented here with rare archival and candid photography.

Book excerpt: In February 1952, the Air Force announced its plans to build Grand Forks Air Force Base to support Strategic Air Command bombers and tankers as well as Air Defense Command fighter-interceptors. On February 8, 1957, Air Defense Command activated the 486th Fighter Group on Grand Forks Air Force Base. In December 1957, the Air Force activated the Grand Forks Air Defense System of the North American Air Defense Command. This sector became operational with the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment system to cover the air space of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota and one Canadian province (Manitoba). The first Boeing B-52H Stratofortress arrived on April 29, 1962. In 1983, the B-52Hs were replaced with B-52Gs, and on December 4, 1986, B-52Gs departed the base, replaced by B-1B Lancers in 1987. The 321st Strategic Missile Wing became operational to administrate, man, and operate the Minuteman II intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in December 1966. The Air Force made the formal announcement that it would remove 150 Minuteman III ICBMs with the inactivation of the 321st on July 2, 1998. After that, the Detachment 1, 9th Reconnaissance Wing arrived with the Global Hawk.

Book excerpt: Bringing together leading researchers on Canadian air power, On the Wings of War and Peace captures the history of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) during the first decades of the Cold War – a period which marked the zenith of air force accomplishments in peacetime Canada. The volume covers topics that go beyond straightforward flying operations, examining policies that drove operational needs and capabilities and the personnel, technical, and logistical functions that made those operations possible. With contributions written by former RCAF members who have both expert and personal knowledge of their topics, On the Wings of War and Peace brings new perspectives to the RCAF’s role in shaping the modern Canadian nation.

This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1940 Ogdensburg Agreement entrenched a formal defence relationship between Canada and the United States – but was Canadian sovereignty upheld? Sovereignty and Command combines historical narrative with conceptual analysis of sovereignty, command and control systems, military professionalism, and civil-military relations to document the sometimes fractious Canada–US continental air defence relationship. Richard Goette argues that a functional military transition from an air defence system based on cooperation to one based on integrated and centralized command and control under NORAD allowed Canada to retain command of its forces and thus protect Canadian sovereignty.

Book excerpt: The Secret Projects series is now well established with both aviation historians and modelers. American Secret Projects: Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 19451974 describes the important area of post-World War 2 bomber development in the United States. During the period to the 1970s, the U.S Air Force operated several classes of bomber-heavy long-range types for strategic operations, medium bombers, and fighter bombers for interdiction and ground support. The U.S. Navy had its own series of attack aircraft and bombers for delivering nuclear weapons, while the antisubmarine aircraft was another area to be examined in considerable depth. As a superpower, America was also able to look at some of the more unusual approaches in the creative process, for example, bombers propelled by nuclear propulsion. Many of the aircraft that entered service or flew only as prototypes resulted from design competitions involving many other proposals that for one reason or another, never left the drawing board.
