Book excerpt: The European Union (EU) is one of the United States' chief agricultural trading partners but also a major competitor in world markets. Both the United States and the EU provide significant government support for their agricultural sectors. In 2009, the EU and the U.S. together accounted for 60% of all government support to agriculture among the major developed economies. In the U.S., federal farm policy has traditionally focused on price and/or income support programs concentrated on row crops including grains, oilseeds and cotton, as well as sugar and dairy. In contrast, the EU provides more extensive support to a broader range of farm and food products, in addition to traditional row crops, sugar, and dairy. EU support also is extended to fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, and livestock products. This book examines the comparisons and linkages of U.S. and EU agricultural policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the 1930s and the 1950s rural life in Europe underwent profound changes, partly as a result of the Second World War, and partly as a result of changes which had been in progress over many years. This book examines a range of European countries, from Scandinavia to Spain and Ireland to Hungary, during this crucial period, and identifies the common pressures to which they all responded and the features that were unique to individual countries. In particular, it examines the processes of agricultural development over western Europe as a whole, the impact of the war on international trading patterns, the relationships between states and farmers, and the changing identities of rural populations. It presents a bold attempt to write rural history on a European scale, and will be of interest not only to historians and historical geographers, but also to those interested in the historical background to the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union, to which the changes discussed here provided a dramatic prologue.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Law - Comparative Legal Systems, Comparative Law, grade: 1,3, University of Bonn, course: Lebensmittelrecht, language: English, abstract: In July 2013, negotiations concerning the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) were initiated. Objective of the negotiations is the generation of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the United States (U.S.) and the European Union (EU) to promote trade by reducing trade barriers, including tariff and non-tariff ones. In order to achieve this goal, several issue barriers have to be addressed, inter alia concerning non-tariff barriers including regulatory differences in the sectors of agriculture and food production. While the U.S. and the EU both have high standards concerning the consumer protection and food safety assessment, differences in the basic principle and implementation persist. Both countries pursue an agreement that follows the respective principles and still provides effective trade stimulation. However, based on the rooted differences in the particular food safety systems, challenges are inevitable. The objective of this study is the presentation of the U.S. and EU food safety system as well as special cases highlighting the differences between both systems in terms of risk assessment, prevention, responses and risk communication. The different factors are analyzed both theoretically and on the basis of practical examples. Additionally, the different matters are described in the context of the TTIP to identify issues that may complicate the negotiations. Possibilities to resolve those issues are discussed and recommendations for positive outcomes given.
