Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Church Universal Besides the many well-known tunes by Barnby, there are about twenty by him that have been reprinted very little, if at all, and that are associated with no especial names; these have been numbered for convenience, and have been also given names, for the purpose of easier identification. No alterations have been made in either melody or harmony; but it often was found out of the question to obtain the origi nal form in which tunes were written, as so many of them have been tampered with in the course of time. In such cases the attempt was made to get as near to the original as possible, and at any rate to have the harmonization correct. Three tunes had to be changed (though not in melody or harmony) to fit the hymns; they are Peace, by Elvey, Amsterdam (hymns 315 and and Mary Magdalene, by Dykes. One thing, however, has been done, which it is hoped will be justified by the result, - the transposition of a large number of tunes to a lower key, to fit them better for congregational singing. There are many in common use that lie too high for average voices, at least for unison singing. To take two instances, Amsterdam and Bethany become comfortable, instead of almost impossible for congregational use, by lowering their pitch a tone. Many organists habitually transpose such tunes in prac tice, and it seemed better to print them in that manner. General Hymns As a contribution to a study which in our days has become of in creasing interest both on literary and on devotional grounds, Mr. And Mrs. Rylands now offer the volume to their friends. They have no intention of publishing it; but, at the same time, would make grateful acknowledgment to those authors and holders of copyrights who have permitted the free use of their works. In the prosecution of the task of selection, it has been very interesting to note the way in which common consent has fixed upon certain Hymns as specially adapted for congregational praise. It is not always easy to say on what special quality in the Hymns chosen this unanimity is based; and, instead of criticism, it may be useful to indicate the Hymns themselves, as among the best known, the most commonly employed, and the clearest treasures Of the Christian Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns Historically Famous The purpose of this volume is twofold: To in epire a warmer love of Church song; and to make the reader better acquainted with that class of hymns which are noted for the history they have made. The special aim has been to take the more popular and useful of our familiar compositions and give a fuller and more connected story of the lives of the authors, the origin of the hymns, with incidents of interest and value illustrating their influence, than have yet appeared in any annotated hymnal either in America or Great Britain. Twenty-three chapters are devoted to Church hymns and gospel songs which have two common characteristics universal popularity, and the power to make spiritual history. Many hymns are historic solely because their origin is closely related to some striking event, or associated with some hallowed experience; and the rule governing the scope of the book has been re laxed that a few of those having particular merit, might be annotated. The chapter - Five Lay Hymn Writers - was inserted for two important reasons First, the position those consecrated laymen occupy in Church hymnody in all English-speaking coun tries, is unique; and, second, the hymns selected from their writings and printed in these pages, are of great poetic beauty, and add much to the pleasure and profitof public worship. There are many favorite hymns which are perfect in form, exquisite in thought and expression, and which no doubt interpret charming Christian experiences, but not being connected with noteworthy historical facts, they could not properly find a place in this volume. In this sea son of Lent - a season which is each year more widely observed by those who pro fess and call themselves Christians - a pre sensation of the greatest of the hymns of the Christian Church is appropriate. This not only for their religious significance, but because of their literary value; an attribute too often lost sight of by the general reader, who does not appreciate the fact that a knowledge of the masterpieces of hymno graphy is as essential to a broad literary education as a knowledge of the master pieces of short-story composition. Were we obliged to search the treasures of the various hymnodies, the task of selecting the seven great hymns - one for each Wednes day in Lent - would be appalling, and years might well be occupied in the task; but, fortunately, the responsibility of selection and the labor of appraisement has been.
