Book excerpt: "The shots kept coming and we couldn't pin down the source. We had our weapons drawn, but we could not shoot blindly into the area we just came, other Israeli soldiers were still in the area, and god forbid we hit them. Rather than return fire, we stayed pinned down while the head of our unit called in another tank. The tank rolled in and let out a smokescreen. As I crawled behind the tank, I could hear pop pop as the sniper's bullets bounced off it." 'Under the Stretcher' takes you into the 2014 Operation Protective Edge" the latest of the Gaza-Israeli conflicts, through the eyes of Max Levin, an American-born Israeli soldier who immigrated in 2012 to join the Israeli army. This book takes you step by step on his journey as he immigrates to Israel, learns Hebrew, goes through many grueling try-outs to finally make it into one of Israel's special forces units - Palchan Tzanhanim. He then was immediately thrust into this war where he found himself fighting for his new known friends and family, only a 10 min jog behind him. To then going through the aftermath of the war, the mourning of lost ones, and the continuation of having to completely change one's mentality from a soldier at war to a soldier at peace, trying to keep all parties safe and sound while in the dangerous West Bank. For those of you who want to learn more about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, this book will give you personal stories from an American raised boy, with American values who served in the modern Israeli army. If you want a detailed account of a recent army experience from a soldier who made it into an elite unit, this book can act as a road map to be able to find one's self in a similar situation. If you want to learn what life is like as an Israeli soldier today, this book will inform you of what it is really like. If you want to learn more about Israel's latest war, this book gives a detailed description of what it was like being at the front lines, and many times behind enemy lines, taking part in vital operations during the war. Book excerpt: Among the thousands of men who shivered and suffered in the trenches during the First World War, some did not even have the protection of a weapon. Members of the Royal Army Medical Corps (the RAMC) were there not to take lives, but to save them. Many chose this difficult and dangerous work because of their principles - including volunteer Charles Horton, who went through the horrors of Passchendaele, Ypres and the Somme, fighting to get the injured away from the guns, to the safety of the field hospitals and beyond. After the war, Horton felt that the RAMC and their sacrifices were forgotten, and so in 1970 he wrote down his memories. In this glorious book, full of first hand detail, he takes us back to the trenches in France and the mountains of Italy. This is a wonderful authentic account into one man's struggle to survive - and to keep others alive. With the approval of Horton's family, author Dale le Vack has edited Horton's journals for clarity, and added more text to provide background. The result is a superb memoir of one of the darkest periods in history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physical properties of mortars, the bond strength of the mortars to masonry units, and the structural strength of concrete masonry and composite masonry walls containing the mortars are discussed and compared. All of the mortars were tempered to as wet a consistency as could be conveniently handled by the mason. The compressive strength of the walls increased, in general, with the compressive strength of the mortar. The racking and flexural strengths of the walls increased with the bond strength of the mortar. The strength of bond test specimens tended to increase with the compressive strength of the wet consistency mortars that were used. However, bond strength appeared to be the dominant factor affecting the racking and flexural strength of the walls. Increase in both bond strength and wall strength with compressive strength of the mortar was not proportional to the relative compressive strengths of the type N and type S mortars. The stiffness of walls subjected to compressive and flexural loads increased with the bond and compressive strength of the mortars. However, the stiffness of walls subjected to flexural loads appeared to be more dependent upon the number of bed joints in the tensile face and on their extension in bond than upon the bending strains in the masonry materials.
