Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores both the history and current diplomatic and foreign policy challenges in Turkish-French relations. By critically analyzing Turkish and French government and archival documents, as well as other primary sources, it reviews the evolution of Turkish-French relations and offers a better understanding of various diplomatic issues, foreign policy decisions, and geopolitical questions. Furthermore, it sheds new light on the significance of domestic political demands for foreign policy decisions and the importance of mutual perceptions in shaping the two countries’ relations. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which studies the history of Turkish-French relations, including the Ottoman Empire’s trade relations with France, France’s relations with the modern Republic of Turkey, and relations during the Cold War and its aftermath. The second part analyzes various dimensions, including diplomatic challenges, the two countries’ foreign policy concepts, geopolitical aspects, economic and trade relations, and their cultural relationship. In turn, the third part presents case studies on more specific issues related to Franco-Turkish relations, including Turkey’s EU accession process, the Armenian and Kurdish issues, and French and Turkish perspectives on the MENA region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 2000s, Turkey has shown an unprecedented interest in its diaspora. This book provides the first in-depth examination of the institutionalisation of Turkey's diaspora engagement policy since the Justice and Development Party's rise to power in 2002, the Turkish diaspora's new role as an agent of diplomatic goals, and how Turkey's growing sphere of influence affects intra-diaspora politics and diplomatic relations with Europe. The book is based on fieldwork in Turkey, France and Germany, and interviews conducted with diaspora organisation leaders and policymakers. Diasporas have become transformative for relations at the state-to-state level and blur the division between the domestic and the foreign. A case study of Turkey's diasporas is significant at a time when emigrants from Turkey form the largest Muslim community in Europe and when issues of diplomacy, migration and citizenship have become more salient than ever.

Bailey finds that the Reform Movement was essentially Turkish in origin, and was motivated not by a desire for an improved order but by the sheer necessity for preservation; that Britain did not originate the regeneration of Turkey and encouraged it but little; that the British foreign ministers between 1825 and 1853 pursued a status quo policy which retarded rather than promoted the real reformation of the old Turkish state.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Region: Western Europe, , language: English, abstract: The accession of Turkey into the European Union is one of the most controversial subjects in the process of the enlargement of the EU. Especially in Germany the possible integration of Turkey is an issue that is discussed on a broad scale in the society, since a large part of the German population is of Turkish descent and the aftereffects of a closer relation with Turkey seems to raise personal interest among most of Germany's citizens. The current unrest and rioting in Istanbul along with the censorship of certain media like the internet-based social networking service Twitter by the administration of Recep Tayyip Erdogan added its share to the futility of an acceleration to the process of Turkeys integration in the European Union. After the visit of the German President Joachim Gauck, a number of German politicians pointed out, that Turkey under its current government is not going to become a member state of the EU. One could argue that the current situation in Turkey makes it indeed uneasy to imagine it to become a stable member that fulfills the rules of accession. However, Turkey was granted the rank of a potential member of the European Union almost fifteen years ago. Since then, the opposition against it didn't only rally in Germany. In this essay the author examines the major reasons for the resistance among the French people to Turkeys integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an analysis of Turkish foreign policy based on transnational(ist) perspectives. In order to counterbalance the state-centric accounts that dominate this area of study, the authors provide theoretical frameworks as well as historical and contemporary case studies that emphasize transnational dynamics. The content is divided into four complementary sections that explain and exemplify transnational (f)actors in the context of Turkish foreign policy. The first addresses theoretical and ideational frameworks that illustrate the relevance of a transnational account, while the second demonstrates the possibility of developing transnationally oriented approaches even in historical cases, going beyond a presentist focus. In the third and fourth sections, the book focuses on two prominent non-state actors, namely diaspora communities and non-governmental organizations, which operate at the interstices of the domestic and the international. This allows the authors to highlight the significance of transnational dynamics in Turkey’s foreign policy.
