Book excerpt: Concepts of Biology is designed for the single-semester introduction to biology course for non-science majors, which for many students is their only college-level science course. As such, this course represents an important opportunity for students to develop the necessary knowledge, tools, and skills to make informed decisions as they continue with their lives. Rather than being mired down with facts and vocabulary, the typical non-science major student needs information presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. Even more importantly, the content should be meaningful. Students do much better when they understand why biology is relevant to their everyday lives. For these reasons, Concepts of Biology is grounded on an evolutionary basis and includes exciting features that highlight careers in the biological sciences and everyday applications of the concepts at hand.We also strive to show the interconnectedness of topics within this extremely broad discipline. In order to meet the needs of today's instructors and students, we maintain the overall organization and coverage found in most syllabi for this course. A strength of Concepts of Biology is that instructors can customize the book, adapting it to the approach that works best in their classroom. Concepts of Biology also includes an innovative art program that incorporates critical thinking and clicker questions to help students understand--and apply--key concepts.

The biochemistry/USMLE® review you’ve been waiting for . . . clear, concise, high yield, and clinically relevant INCLUDES AN ONLINE VIDEO LECTURE FOR EVERY CHAPTER! The goal of Fundamentals of Biochemistry: Medical Course & Step 1 Review is to make biochemistry an approachable, clinically relevant subject for your first years of medical school, and, most importantly, when you prepare to take the USMLE® Step 1 examination. The authors believe that when biochemistry is put in a clinical context, learning and understanding it becomes much less complicated, as all the pieces of the “puzzle” fall into place. A SELF-CONTAINED, HIGH-YIELD GUIDE UNLIKE ANY OTHER You will find Fundamentals of Biochemistry: Medical Course & Step 1 Review to be a self-contained guide to high-yield biochemistry, with a strong focus on the topics you are most likely to see on the USMLE® Step 1 exam. You can select any chapter and find a self-contained summary of the relevant topic. The authors begin with the basics of the cell and DNA, and protein synthesis, then cover the central aspects of metabolism, and finish with nutrition and genetics. EASY-TO-ABSORB CHAPTERS ENHANCED BY COMPANION ONLINE VIDEOS The information is delivered in a simple outline format that pinpoints the high-yield information you need to know. Each chapter is also presented as a lecture, in video format, so you can review the topic in real time and add additional notes as you learn each topic or review them later.

Book excerpt: This volume represents the proceedings of the 24th Mos bach Colloquium on "Regulation of Transcription and Trans lation in Eukaryotes" which was held April 26-28, 1973, in Mosbach, Germany, under the auspices of the Gesellschaft fiir Biologische Chemie. To the three of us (H. KERSTEN, P. KARLSON and myself) who were commissioned with the invitation of speakers, it was a difficult decision as to whether we should attempt to cover with some twenty contributions as many aspects of this broad topic as possible, or to sacrifice the intellectually perhaps more pleasing but more specula tive concepts and to concentrate on a few aspects of gene expression in reasonable detail. We unanimously decided on the latter course, leaving such important and timely topics as for example, hormone action, cyclic AMP and reverse transcription to the proceedings of other symposia, and con centrating on the four questions which are most basic to an understanding of the mechanisms of transcription and trans lation and for which fragmentary but nonetheless reliable experimental results have become available within the last few years. These are the structure of chromatin, the syn thesis of messenger RNA, the structure of the active ribo some, and the role of initiation factors in protein synthesis.

Book excerpt: Most laboratories conducting studies that use molecular biology techniques employ in vitro transcription and translation systems as a routine part of their day-to-day research. The commercial availability of purified bacterial RNA polymerase and the availability of robust tra- lation systems has made in vitro systems attractive not only as an alt- native to the in vivo expression of genes, but also as good model systems for studying specific aspects of transcription and translation. Although fairly efficient eukaryotic translation systems have been established for a number of years, reconstitution of transcription in vitro has proved to be more difficult. Recent improvements in fractionation techniques and the cloning of proteins involved in transcription have made this a fast moving area of research. Considerable progress has also been made in recent years in developing in vitro systems to study transcription and translation in chloroplasts and mitochondria, together with systems for the study of protein import. In Vitro Transcription and Translation Protocols provides many detailed experimental procedures for prokaryotic transcription and translation systems, together with protocols for many key techniques used in the analysis of eukaryotic transcription. In keeping with the successful format of preceding volumes of the Methods in Molecular Biology series, step-by-step instructions are provided, together with extensive notes that cover troubleshooting and special tips considered important.
