Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Transcendent Love: Dostoevsky and the Search for a Global Ethic, Leonard G. Friesen ranges widely across Dostoevsky's stories, novels, journalism, notebooks, and correspondence to demonstrate how Dostoevsky engaged with ethical issues in his times and how those same issues continue to be relevant to today's ethical debates. Friesen contends that the Russian ethical voice, in particular Dostoevsky's voice, deserves careful consideration in an increasingly global discussion of moral philosophy and the ethical life. Friesen challenges the view that contemporary liberalism provides a religiously neutral foundation for a global ethic. He argues instead that Dostoevsky has much to offer when it comes to the search for a global ethic, an ethic that for Dostoevsky was necessarily grounded in a Christian concept of an active, extravagant, and transcendent love. Friesen also investigates Dostoevsky's response to those who claimed that contemporary European trends, most evident in the rising secularization of nineteenth-century society, provided a more viable foundation for a global ethic than one grounded in the One, whom Doestoevsky called simply "the Russian Christ." Throughout, Friesen captures a sense of the depth and sheer loveliness of Dostoevsky's canon.

Book excerpt: Why this book is so important to me and why I would love for everyone to read it: When we find the Naked Jesus, we uncover the freedom to put our faith into action; we desire to do something and not just believe something; we stop talking a good game and get dirty playing the game; we are freed from the institutional church structure that desires to define us and stand invited to the table where the Naked Jesus help us discover who we are; we are freed from the garbage it brings to the party; and we no longer swim in the slime of the shallow end of the pool.

Book excerpt: A timely work of contemporary magical realism, about a world plagued by violence, and the girl called upon to be a hero. When terrorists bomb Disney World, seventeen-year-old Iris Spero is as horrified as anyone else. Then a stranger shows up on her stoop in Brooklyn, revealing a secret about the mysterious circumstances surrounding Iris’s birth, and throwing her entire identity into question. Everything she thought she knew about her parents, and about herself, is a lie. Suddenly, the press is confronting Iris with the wild notion that she might be “special.” More than just special: she could be the miracle the world now so desperately needs. Families all across the grieving nation are pinning their hopes on Iris like she is some kind of saint or savior. She’s no longer sure whom she can trust—except for Zane, a homeless boy who long ago abandoned any kind of hope. She knows she can’t possibly be the glorified person everyone wants her to be… but she also can’t go back to being safe and anonymous. When nobody knows her but they all want a piece of her, who is Iris Spero now? And how can she—one teenage girl—possibly heal a broken world?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his latest book, Walter Doyle Staples invites his readers to experience life as fully aware, fully conscious, and fully functioning individuals. Dr. Staples presents powerful and life-changing ideas and concepts on how to transcend our ego-based state of consciousness to achieve deep peace, profound love, and infinite joy. Happy 95% of the Time explains how our attachment to our ego can only create dysfunction and suffering in our lives, resulting in fear, anger, guilt, regret, depression, and/or despair. He contends we need to awaken to a new consciousness and experience a new beginning. Happy 95% of the Time describes in detail the three primary ways to overcome low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, and depression: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)—an example of Western, left-brain analytical thinking. Practical spirituality—an example of Eastern, right-brain mystical thinking. Mindfulness meditation—an inner-body, contemplative approach designed to manage our internal thought processes in order to calm the mind. Numerous world-renowned authorities on personal success—from Jack Canfield, Ken Blanchard, and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale to Art Linkletter, Anthony Robbins, and Brian Tracy—have praised Walter’s previous books. We are sure they—and you—will find Happy 95% of the Time just as valuable and compelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses issues of moral pluralism and polarization by drawing attention to the transcendent character of the good. It probes the history of Christian theology and moral philosophy to investigate the value of this idea and then relates it to contemporary moral issues. The good is transcendent in that it goes beyond concrete goods, things, acts, or individual preferences. It functions as the pole of a compass that helps orient our moral life. This volume explores the critical tension between the transcendent good and its concrete embodiments in the world through concepts like conscience, natural and divine law, virtue, and grace. The chapters are divided into three parts. Part I discusses metaphysical issues like the realist nature and the unity of the good in relation to philosophical, naturalist, and theological approaches from Augustine to Iris Murdoch. The chapters in Part II explore issues about knowing the transcendent good and doing good, exemplified in the delicate balance between divine command and human virtuousness. Early Protestant theological views prove to be excellent interlocutors for this reflection. Finally, Part III focuses on how transcendence is at stake in two heavily debated moral issues of today: euthanasia and the family. The Transcendent Character of the Good will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in theological ethics, moral philosophy, and the history of ethics.
