Thk name of Hchleicher cannot he uttered by any student of comparative philology of the present generation without respect and admiration. Especially now, when the memory of his early and lamented death is so recent, no one can desire to remember aught of him save his immense industry and erudition, his ardor iu the pursuit of the science to which his life was devoted, his critical acuteness, his liberal and independent spirit, his love of freedom, and the many other excellencies of his character as man and as scholar. His part in the development of the historical study of language was no unimportant one. His manual of Indo-European comparative grammar has been the convenient and instructive text-book out of which many, in various lands, have drawn a knowledge and love of the subject; and, being now in process of translation into English, its usefulness among English speakers will soon be largely increased.
