Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training Young Horses to Jump There are many branches of horsemanship and horse-training. In order to excel in any branch we must have method and a combina tion of theory and practice. It has been the author's duty as an instructor at the Cavalry School to study the subject thoroughly, and in placing his experience and methods before the public he is voluntarily giving away valuable knowledge. A portion of this book was written by the author at my request and published in the Cavalry Journal as part of a series on horse training, which appeared in the numbers published in 1912. I heartily commend these pages to my brother officers, and feel sure that they will be read with equal interest by all horsemen, whether military or civilian. J. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Guide to the Breaking and Training of the Young Horse The author of this little work is fully aware that he can claim but little merit on the score of originality, as many clever writers on this subject have preceded him; but their precepts are for the most part of so elaborate and technical a nature, as to render them comparatively useless, if not unintelligible, to the majority of readers. The object of this short treatise is, to place within the reach of every one, a few plain practical instructions, by which the horse may be trained to work with comfort to himself, and safety to his rider, thereby preventing numerous accidents to both. The horse is beyond all contradiction, one of the most beautiful, as well as valuable animals man has subjugated to his will, whether we view him in point of utility, or as contributing to our pleasure; and this perhaps may in some degree, account for the ambition that seems natural to most men, to be thought judges of this animal. Among Englishmen in particular, this feeling seems to pervade every rank, from the nobleman with his numerous stud to the meanest helper in his stable. Even the mechanic, who is rarely loosed from his toil, when he does take a holiday, usually selects the race time for the occasion; and although he may never have crossed a horse, still takes an interest in his performance, and delivers his opinion as to the quality of the different animals, as boldly as if he were a profound judge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse Training by Modern Methods The object of this book is to arrange in the most convenient, clear, and concise form the modern system of horse-training, in so far as it is applicable to the train ing of horses in the mounted service of the United States. No attempt has been made in any case to improve upon methods already deemed correct by the best horse men; and as such methods can be found dealing with all points of training, it follows that the subject matter in this book is not original. Where the best was to be found, there it has been sought, and where the authors of previous works have expressed their ideas in language considered the most concise and clear, their words have been copied verbatim, with due acknowledgement to the authors.
