Book excerpt: Following the split with FIDE when World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov defended his title in a match with Nigel Short in 1993 outside of FIDE, there had been two world chess champions, the "Classical Champion" who had won his title by defeating the current champion in a long match, and the FIDE World Champion who had won one of the World Championship tournaments organized by FIDE. Garry Kasparov lost a match to Kramnik in 2000 so Kramnik became the "Classical World Champion." Numerous efforts to unify the championship by arranging a match between the FIDE Champion and the Classical Champion had fallen through until FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov put up a million dollar prize for a match between Kramnik and the FIDE Champion Topalov. Kramnik won the match but a scandal arose because Kramnik had spent excessive amounts of time on the toilet during the match which may have given him the opportunity to cheat using a cell phone computer. This became known as "The ToiletGate Affair." This book by Grandmaster Raymond Keene proves through in depth analysis of the moves in the games that cheating did NOT occur by either side in the match, because both of them played so badly that cheating could not have been involved. No computer would have made the mistakes that they made. This result is confirmed by computer chess data analysis through an independent computer study that also showed that no cheating was involved.

From London to Elista gives a fascinating look behind the scenes of top-level chess. It provides superb analysis of all the games by Bareev, and it does much more. In Socratestyle dialogues, Bareev and co-author Ilya Levitov reveal everything about the preparation, the progress and the aftermath, about the secret strategy and the brutal stress of the three battles. Book excerpt: The stunning story of Russia's slide back into a dictatorship-and how the West is now paying the price for allowing it to happen. The ascension of Vladimir Putin-a former lieutenant colonel of the KGB-to the presidency of Russia in 1999 was a strong signal that the country was headed away from democracy. Yet in the intervening years-as America and the world's other leading powers have continued to appease him-Putin has grown not only into a dictator but an international threat. With his vast resources and nuclear arsenal, Putin is at the center of a worldwide assault on political liberty and the modern world order. For Garry Kasparov, none of this is news. He has been a vocal critic of Putin for over a decade, even leading the pro-democracy opposition to him in the farcical 2008 presidential election. Yet years of seeing his Cassandra-like prophecies about Putin's intentions fulfilled have left Kasparov with a darker truth: Putin's Russia, like ISIS or Al Qaeda, defines itself in opposition to the free countries of the world. As Putin has grown ever more powerful, the threat he poses has grown from local to regional and finally to global. In this urgent book, Kasparov shows that the collapse of the Soviet Union was not an endpoint-only a change of seasons, as the Cold War melted into a new spring. But now, after years of complacency and poor judgment, winter is once again upon us. Argued with the force of Kasparov's world-class intelligence, conviction, and hopes for his home country, Winter Is Coming reveals Putin for what he is: an existential danger hiding in plain sight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilhelm Steinitz, the winner of the first official World Chess Championship in 1886, would have rubbed his eyes in disbelieve if he could have seen how popular chess is today. With millions of players all around the world, live internet transmissions of major and minor competitions, and educational programs in thousands of schools, chess has truly become a global passion. And what would Steinitz, who had financial problems his whole life and died in poverty, have thought of the current world champion, Magnus Carlsen, who became a multi-millionaire in his early twenties just by playing great chess? The history of the World Chess Championship reflects these enormous changes, and Andre Schulz tells the stories of the title fights in fascinating detail: the historical and social backgrounds, the prize money and the rules, the seconds and other helpers, and the psychological wars on and off the board. Relive the magic of Capablanca, Alekhine, Botvinnik, Tal, Karpov, Kasparov, Bobby Fischer and the others! Andre Schulz has selected one defining game from each championship, and he explains the moves of the Champions in a way that is easily accessible for amateur players. This is a book that no true chess lover wants to miss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veselin Topalov (1975) is a Bulgarian chess grandmaster, a former #1 in the world rankings and a former World Champion. He is a very energetic player, always looking for interesting moves, complicated positions and fighting chances. He never gives up and plays for a win with both the white and the black pieces. Topalov became the FIDE World Chess Champion by winning the FIDE World Chess Championship 2005 tournament in San Luis, Argentina. He lost his title a year later in a match against Vladimir Kramnik. According to FIDE, which began ranking chess players in 1971, Topalov has been #1 for 27 months (in 2006/2007 and 2008/2010). Only Kasparov, Karpov, Fischer and Carlsen have reigned longer. Topalov has won dozens of tournaments, including Linares 2005 (joint first with Kasparov), Wijk aan Zee 2006 (joint first with Anand) and Wijk aan Zee 2007 (joint first with Aronian and Radjabov), Linares 2010 and Norway Chess 2015. Try this training book and play the same winning moves as Veselin Topalov. This book offers you one hundred training exercises, in positions where Topalov turned the game in his favour. The puzzles start at a moderate level and gradually get more difficult. Don't give up!
