Book excerpt: At the start of the gay rights movement in 1969, evangelicalism's leading voices cast a vision for gay people who turn to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure. With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel. Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted." For orthodox Christians, the way forward is a path back to where we were forty years ago. It is time again to focus with our Neo-Evangelical fathers on care--not cure--for our non-straight sisters and brothers who are living lives of costly obedience to Jesus. With warmth and humor as well as original research, Still Time to Care will chart the path forward for our churches and ministries in providing care. It will provide guidance for the gay person who hears the gospel and finds themselves smitten by the life-giving call of Jesus. Woven throughout the book will be Richard Lovelace’s 1978 call for a "double repentance" in which gay Christians repent of their homosexual sins and the church repents of its homophobia--putting on display for all the power of the gospel.

So often we want to be of help, but find ourselves uncertain about how to proceed, especially during a time of need. What is really needed of us then? How can we offer it? Martin Buber tells us that what is needed most urgently during a crisis is "a Presence through which we know that nevertheless there is meaning." A Time to Care is an updated version of a book which was written for caretakers of all kinds, as well as those in need of care. The book is based upon years of working with patients, hospital staff, ministers and chaplains. It offers a different look at how healing happens, and what is required for true connection and conversation to take place. Combing the principles and practices of Eastern and Western psychology and philosophy, the work provides unique insights on how to be truly present for both yourself and others during a time of need. Along with discussion of many issues, the book includes simple, creative exercises and practices which allow the reader to integrate the information and utilize it in their everyday lives. As they do so, it becomes easy to see what is truly needed of us, and how to offer it. SOME OF THE TOPICS EXPLORED INCLUDE: The Nature of Real Kindness True Giving and Receiving The Gift of Presence True Conversation and Connection ENDORSEMENTS "Dr. Shoshanna's words are wonderful," Marrianne Williamson, Brenda's work is so simple and clear. You hear what she says, you know it is the truth and then there is no more commentary. It is all unpretentious, genuine and true. Thank you, Brenda, for making us feel so comfortable." --Jon Mundy, Ph.d. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to radical transformations in the organisation and delivery of health and care services across the world. In many countries, policy makers have rushed to re-organise care services to meet the surge demand of COVID-19, from re-purposing existing services to creating new ‘field’ hospitals. Such strategies signal important and sweeping changes in the organisation of both ‘COVID’ and ‘non-COVID’ care, whilst asking more fundamental questions about the long-term organisation of care ‘after COVID’. In some contexts, the pandemic has exposed the fragilities and vulnerabilities of care systems, whilst in others, it has shown how services are organised to be more resilient and adaptive to unanticipated pressures. The COVID-19 pandemic presents a rare opportunity to examine empirically and to develop new theoretical frameworks on how and why health systems adapt to such unusual and intense pressures. International contributors consider how responses to COVID-19 are transforming the organisation and governance of health and care services and explore questions around strategic leadership at local, regional, national and transnational level. The book offers unique insight and analysis on the dynamics of policy-making, the organisation and governance of care organisations, the role of technologies in governing, the changing role of professionals and the possibilities for more resilient care systems.
