Book excerpt: Tiger Salamander Care Handbook: General Guide on Tiger Salamanders Fostering; Conduct, Health Issues, What They Eat, Lodging & Picking One as a Pet, Etc. Tiger salamanders are strikingly lovely creatures that are mainstream outlandish pets. They have a genuinely long life expectancy and as a rule become very agreeable. Local to North America, these creatures of land and water are found in forests, just as in verdant fields, living in underground tunnels close to waterways. The fundamental shading of tiger salamanders is yellow blotches, spots, or bars against a dark foundation, however the examples and force of shading fluctuate among the subspecies. In addition, they have enormous eyes, short noses, thick necks, solid legs, and long tails. As pets, they can be very vivacious and engaging, adjusting admirably to bondage under the correct conditions. When you have their lodging set up, the consideration is genuinely direct. Hope to invest energy every week on feedings, cleaning, and observing the dampness and temperature. And if you are the type that crave to have tiger salamanders as pets, then this great guide will take you through all the basics of tiger salamander care, from start to finish! These and many more will be looked into in this wonderful guide! Book excerpt: Jens Benthien introduces the interested beginner to the world of keeping and breeding Tiger Salamanders in the terrarium, but also provides some useful pointers and suggestions for the more advanced terrarium keeper. While Tiger Salamanders are well suited to the beginner in keeping amphibians, it is also of interest to the more advanced enthusiast, in particular because it poses some challenges with regard to propagating it. Following an overview of the genus, the distribution, and the ecology of Tiger Salamanders in the wild, the book with its appr. 80 color photographs details how to house these animals according to their biological needs, how to properly feed and care for them, and what is required to propagate the representatives of the North American Tiger Salamanders of the genus Ambystoma. Their ability to optionally remain and become sexually mature at their larval stage (neoteny), the problem of hybridizing, and the possible emergence of color anomalies are briefly discussed as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their abundance in many parts of North America, salamanders have generally been neglected by all but a few specialists. In this book—first published in 1943—Sherman C. Bishop discusses in a lively but authoritative manner the 126 species and subspecies of salamanders that are known to exist in the United States, Canada, and Baja California. Group by group, Bishop describes salamanders in accounts that give the common and technical names, type of locality, range, habitat, size, anatomical characteristics, color, breeding habits, and relationships—all in a uniform arrangement that makes the handbook especially convenient for studying both living animals and laboratory specimens. His brief introduction surveys the relationships and general habits of salamanders and gives information on collecting and preserving them. In his foreword, Edmund D. Brodie, Jr., a specialist on salamanders, updates the taxonomy of the group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the first four volumes of the Handbook of Genetics is to bring together collections of relatively short, authoritative essays or an notated compilations of data on topics of significance to geneticists. Many of the essays will deal with various aspects of the biology of certain species or species groups selected because they are favorite subjects for genetic investigation in nature or the laboratory. Often there will be an encyclo pedic amount of information available on such species, with new papers appearing daily. Most of these will be written for specialists in a jargon that is bewildering to a novice, and sometimes even to a veteran geneticist working with evolutionarily distant organisms. For such readers what is needed is a written introduction to the morphology, life cycle, reproductive behavior, and culture methods for the species in question. What are its particular advantages (and disadvantages) for genetic study, and what have we learned from it? Where are the classic papers, the key bibli ographies, and how does one get stocks of wild type or mutant strains? Lists giving the symbolism and descriptions for selected mutants that have been retained and are thus available for future studies are provided whenever possible. Genetic and cytological maps, mitotic karyotypes, and haploid DNA values are also included when available. Volume 4 deals with certain vertebrate species that have been studied in considerable detail from the standpoint of genetics or molecular cytogenetics. Such data are available for only a relatively few vertebrates.
