Knapp was an outspoken writer who addressed many controversial topics in her columns for The San Francisco Call. She was known as a fixture of the turn-of-the-century San Francisco Bay Area literary scene. Although progressive in many causes, Knapp expressed Anti-Chinese sentiments and criticisms of the women's suffrage movement. Knapp is also remembered for her relationship with Charlotte Perkins Stetson (later Gilman). They first became close friends and later moved in together.
