Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the facts about Dr. John H. Holliday and breathes life back into Doc himself. The author has lived through many of the same most crucial moments as Doc; in fact, it is a name that his patients called him and still do. He is, like Doc, a Catholic. It is singularly amusing that they both have so many, many things in common, except that Pat stinks at poker most of the time. This is a very unique book. There has never been a book that tells the tale of Doc Holliday from Docs side as consistently as this, knowing the disease intimately and living with an almost identical set of symptoms. He has a chronic cough at times so severe that it results to severe pain in his intercostal (chest muscles) that lasts for three days, making it hard to breathe, move, or even bear down. Coughing or sneezing double him over. At times, he coughs up blood. He is often hypoxic and unsteady on his legs. He cannot walk without a cane due to dizziness. All this makes his appetite poor. He may be dizzy enough to fall down, with the room spinning and unable to move for twenty minutes to two hours. The facts were gathered for over forty-seven years of research, off and on. So it truly is a fictional book, perhaps more true to facts than a nonfictional one.

Book excerpt: On their farm nestled in upstate New York, veterinarian Austin McKenzie and his wife Madeline keep themselves busy looking after ailing farm animals and pets in poor health. But while they may be able to mend creatures great and small, they have yet to find a cure for murder. During his career, Austin has met several snakes—and none of them was meaner than turkey farmer Lewis O’Leary. So it’s no surprise when O’Leary’s dead body is found in a dumpster. Circumstantial evidence points to a turkey feed salesman, whom police have arrested. But the doc has a feeling the guy was framed. To prove it, though, Austin will have to narrow down the list of Old Man O’Leary’s enemies—but how, with so many? His family is ready to gobble up any inheritance from the turkey farm; an animal rights activist wanted his head on a platter; and this case will be anything but gravy. “A savvy sleuth with a kind heart.”—Richmond Times-Dispatch

Book excerpt: During basic training in the army, it was common practice for the recruits to exercise and march to the cadence of popular songs of the time to keep the trainees in sync. It also took the trainees' minds off the exercise--sometimes strenuous--that they were engaged in, and a five-mile forced march before breakfast was tolerated with little grumbling. Although the cadence was always the same, the words were often changed to reflect the reality of military duty. At the time, the words of the Coasters's hit song "Poison Ivy" were adapted to fit the life of a grunt in Vietnam. For example, "Poison ivy, poison ivy / Late at night while you're sleepin' / Poison ivy comes a-creepin' around" was changed to "Charlie Cong, Charlie Cong / Late at night while you're sleepin' / Charlie Cong comes a-creepin' around." On arriving in Vietnam, his first assignment was with the Fourth Infantry Division which was commonly referred to as the Ivy Division but was given several unofficial nicknames including the Funky Fourth and the Poison Ivy Division. Although he was only assigned to the Fourth Infantry for one-third of his tour, it was the most dangerous and memorable four months he spent in Vietnam. It seemed fitting that Poison Ivy was the perfect choice for the title of this book.
