Fun, suspenseful, and unpredictable, the No Place Like Holmes books are fantastic reads, and author Jason Lethcoe is a fine craftsman of words to boot. I highly recommend this series.” —Robert Liparulo, bestselling author of Dreamhouse Kings and The 13th Tribe The new resident in 221A Baker Street is about to give Sherlock Holmes a run for his magnifying glass! When Griffin is sent to stay with his detective uncle at 221A Baker Street for the summer, he is certain that his uncle must be the great Sherlock Holmes! But Griffin is disappointed to discover that Holmes lives at 221B Baker Street and his uncle lives unit 221A. His uncle is a detective, just not a very good one. But when Griffin meets a woman with a case that Holmes has turned away for being too ridiculous, he and his uncle team up to help her. Along the way, Griffin shows his uncle just what it means to have true faith in God, even when the case challenges that. The woman claims that her husband was eaten by the Loch Ness Monster, but monsters aren’t real—or are they? “The No Place Like Holmes books will capture you on first page and not let you go until the final fascinating twist and turn. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Read with Jenna Book Club Pick as Featured on Today • “Everything a romantic comedy should be: witty, relatable, and a little complicated.”—People A heartfelt debut about the unlikely relationship between a young woman who’s lost her husband and a major league pitcher who’s lost his game. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth “Evvie” Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn’t correct them. Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy’s childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the “yips”: he can’t throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can’t figure out why. As the media storm heats up, an invitation from Andy to stay in Maine seems like the perfect chance to hit the reset button on Dean’s future. When he moves into an apartment at the back of Evvie’s house, the two make a deal: Dean won’t ask about Evvie’s late husband, and Evvie won’t ask about Dean’s baseball career. Rules, though, have a funny way of being broken—and what starts as an unexpected friendship soon turns into something more. To move forward, Evvie and Dean will have to reckon with their pasts—the friendships they’ve damaged, the secrets they’ve kept—but in life, as in baseball, there’s always a chance—up until the last out. A joyful, hilarious, and hope-filled debut, Evvie Drake Starts Over will have you cheering for the two most unlikely comebacks of the year—and will leave you wanting more from Linda Holmes. Praise for Evvie Drake Starts Over “A quirky, sweet, and splendid story of a woman coming into her own.”—Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six “Effortlessly enjoyable . . . [a] pitch-perfect . . . adult love story that is as romantic as it is real.”–USA Today “Charming, hopeful, and gently romantic . . . Evvie Drake is great company.”—Rainbow Rowell, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Eleanor & Park

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses the lack of shelter—one of the most basic elements of human adaptation—now experienced by many Americans. Based on the presupposition that shelter is a basic human right in the world's richest, most advanced nation, the authors of these essays look more closely than others have yet done at the causes of the current low-income housing crisis and homelessness. Ten anthropologists and a mental health worker use participant observation and other ethnographic methods to observe and document the experiential and geographic diversity of U.S. homelessness. Each chapter focuses on a specific geographic area—urban, suburban, or rural—and a specific category of homeless people—families with children, solitary adults, or both. Based on their findings, the authors also present policy recommendations to ameliorate the housing shortage and prevent homelessness at local, state, and federal levels.

Book excerpt: Synopsis - In There's No Place Like Holmes: Exploring Sense of Place in Crime Fiction, author and architect Derham Groves examines the 'architectural' dimension of the work of several crime fiction writers, focusing primarily on British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but also including Australian authors Marshall Browne, Peter Corris, Michael Jorgensen, Mary-Rose MacColl, Barry Maitland, Peter Temple, and Arthur Upfield. Groves discusses how these authors create a dramatic or suspenseful 'atmosphere' through their vivid and detailed descriptions of the scene of the crime in particular, and the built environment in general. In the case of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Conan Doyle, Groves also identifies some of the actual places that inspired the fictitious places. For example, Groves suggests that the captain's cabin on the S.S. Hope, a whaler on which Conan Doyle served as ship's surgeon in 1880, inspired the building in which Captain Peter Carey was murdered in 'The Adventure of Black Peter' (1904). While other books have examined sense of place in (crime) fiction, such as Literary Architecture: Essays Toward a Tradition - Walter Pater, Gerald Manley Hopkins, Marcel Proust, Henry James (1979) by Ellen Eve Frank, and Dwelling in the Text: Houses in American Fiction (1991) by Marilyn R. Chandler, Groves looks at crime fiction more exclusively from the points of view of artists, architects and designers. Groves discusses at length the art, buildings, exhibitions, interiors, projects, and stage sets that have alluded to or been influenced by crime fiction. These include works by Block Architecture, Robin Boyd, Derek Walker Associates, Buckminster Fuller, Mark Galea, Sharon Goodwin, Derham Groves, David Harris, Christopher Langton, Lyons, Gordon Matta-Clark, May Design Group, Edward Merrill, Moriyama & Teshima Architects, Nat & Ali, SITE, Sally Smart, and students of architecture from RMIT University and the University of Melbourne. Groves concludes that in the areas of place making and place-recording, architects especially can learn a lot from authors of crime fiction. There's No Place Like Holme will be extensively illustrated with colour photographs and black and white drawings.

Makin' Christmas at Holmeses is a memoir of Dan Armstrong’s travel adventures while designing, developing and buying mainly Christmas décor for D.H. Holmes Co., Ltd., a New Orleans - based department store chain. It is a time piece dating 1979-1986, as well as including an epilogue of his later personal travel adventures. There are loads of laughable moments and fun quips that Armstrong has learned along the way from travelling with eccentric companions. Included is how Christmas Ornaments are initially conceived as concepts, and how those concepts are communicated to manufacturers. It is such a thrill to see the finished product that was once only a thought in someone’s mind. This book was a project commenced and completed during the pandemic and is a result of Armstrong’s quarantine during COVID-19.
