Book excerpt: Well known for the important role he played in the American Restoration Movement, Alexander Campbell was one of the most respected and influential religious figures of 19th-century America. Although Campbell’s legacy as a religious leader and theologian has been widely acknowledged and documented, his contributions as a philosopher of religion have been largely neglected. The Philosophy of Religion of Alexander Campbell reintroduces readers to Campbell as a philosopher of religion and explores the philosophical basis for the views underlying his religious movement. It begins with a highly readable discussion of Campbell’s role in antebellum American religion and proceeds to an exploration of his philosophical influences. J. Caleb Clanton then reconstructs, explains, and evaluates Campbell’s philosophy of religion. He critically examines Campbell’s unique, revealed-idea argument for the existence of God—that is, if God did not exist, we could not form the distinct idea of God. Clanton goes on to explore Campbell’s defense of miracles, including the resurrection of Christ, and his responses to the problem of evil and the problem of divine hiddenness. The final and most speculative chapter collects and synthesizes from scattered writings Campbell’s view on morality and religion— namely that there is no morality without God—which has proven difficult to defend on philosophical grounds. With this book, the author makes a unique and important contribution to the literature of the Stone-Campbell movement. Clanton presents Campbell’s views strictly in philosophical terms and evaluates them from a philosophical perspective without regard to religious apologetics. In doing so, he illuminates previously unexplored dimensions of Campbell and his work, both historically and theologically, and clearly validates Campbell’s inclusion in contemporary discussions of the philosophy of religion.

Book excerpt: The first critical biography of Alexander Campbell, one of the founders of the Stone-Campbell Movement A Life of Alexander Campbell examines the core identity of a gifted and determined reformer to whom millions of Christians around the globe today owe much of their identity—whether they know it or not. Douglas Foster assesses principal parts of Campbell’s life and thought to discover his significance for American Christianity and the worldwide movement that emerged from his work. He examines Campbell’s formation in Ireland, his creation and execution of a reform of Christianity beginning in America, and his despair at the destruction of his vision by the American Civil War. A Life of Alexander Campbell shows why this important but sometimes misunderstood and neglected figure belongs at the heart of the American religious story.

Book excerpt: Alexander Campbell: Determined and Dedicated to God "It was a good offer, Hannah. Most men would have jumped at it. I may be a fool." She stared. "Alexander, you didn't refuse it?" He nodded. "Yes, I refused it." The words came with effort. "I told him I expected to spend my life working for the unity of Christians. I'm sorry, Hannah. I'm grateful for every- thing you've done. But I must do what I consider my duty as a"-he hesitated, and then smiled, a broad smile, a grin, somehow of triumph-"as a man of God, I suppose you'd call it." She stared at him, her hands clenched into tiny balls under her crossed arms. "You mean a fool of God, Mr. Campbell. A fool!" The Fool of God by Louis Cochran was originally published in 1958 by Duell, Sloan and Pearce. College Press then published it in 1985. Now, College Press and RENEW.org have collaborated to bring this story back in print again. College Press and RENEW.org see the value in telling the story of Alexander Campbell, who devoted his life to working for the unity of Christians. We all benefit from his legacy and learn from his life of faithfulness.

We have chosen some of his most influential writings here, including his best-known sermon dealing with the Law of Moses, his brilliant destruction of the "annihilation" doctrine, his taking the government to task over capital punishment, and his own translation of the book of Acts.Alexander Campbell did not start the church. He did not start any church. His entire life was dedicated to simply serving Christ in Jesus' church, and helping that church to come back to the biblical standard. It would be wonderful if we had more men like him in the church today.Extra care had been given in correcting any typographical errors, as well as adding footnotes to explain any unfamiliar words and phrases. In all, well over a hundred hours of work has gone into the production of this collection, with the goal of making it as reader-friendly as possible!Contents include:* Alexander Campbell: Matchless Defender of the Protestant Faith. * Sermon on the Law * Life and Death * Instrumental Music in Worship * Is Capital Punishment Sanctioned by Divine Authority? * Confession Unto Salvation * The Bible * God has Spoken to Man in the Bible * Principles of Interpretation * Musings on a Christmas Morning * Acts of the Apostles (translation)
